WMAL-AM To Go ESPN Sports - 6/13 - Cumulus says it will flip 630, WMAL-AM, to a sports talk format as of July 1. It will be known as ESPN 630. The news talk formet now on 630 will remain on WMAL-FM, 105.9.
The new 630 format will feature a batch of ESPN programming, including Mike Golic and Trey Wingo in mornings and Stephen A. Smith in middays. The AMer will continue to carry the Washington Redskins, along with its FM sister. No word on whether Radio One's WTEM, The Team 980, will also be carrying the Redskins this upcoming season. It was sold by team owner Dan Snyder's Red Zebra Broadcasting to Radio One last year. If WTEM sticks with sports, the DC market will now have three English language sports talkers, including format ratings leader 106.7 The Fan, WJFK, which is owned by Entercom.....
AM is slowly dying.....
Espn....turn em off...just paid promos for their other sport programming...and trying to sell their tolerance “xcept for you” mentality..
I used to listen to 630AM all the time when I lived near DC. It was my go to for Rush, Chris Plante, Chris Core, Fred and Grandy.
It’s nothing like it used to be. Was sad to see WGMS 103.5 get turned into sports radio too. I used to listen to that station all the time and I miss those radio personalities. I sometimes wonder what Dennis Owens, Diana Hollender and the others are up to now.
Maybe it wasn’t an accident..................
We’ve had a couple of sports stations here. They didn’t last long. .....................
What the frack?????????? Depending where one lives in the DC area, WMAL’s AM reception is better than the FM reception.
The news talk formet now on 630 will remain on WMAL-FM, 105.9.

When listening to Rush driving from Baltimore vicinity to the south, I switch to 630 AM when 680 AM begins to fade. I guess Ill have to set FM 105.9 as a preset if Rush will be on there.
If we all went back to AM we wouldn’t need seat belts.
Very true. The FM reception stinks north of the beltway.
At least we'll still have Baltimore's WCBM for Rush
I regularly listen to Chris Plante and Rush on WMAL using https://talkright.talkstreamlive.com
I guess I’ll have to ask Alexa to tune into another station besides WMAL for Chris and Rush.
Thats horrible news for me ! thats my source for Rush and the other talk radio Giants when Im in Cape May New Jersey in the summer I pick it up across the Delaware Bay
A.m. radio carries much better than does FM
Yes, that’s why they want to kill it...............
WTF with ANOTHER sports talk station??? I can’t possibly imagine anything more BORING than endless, mindless speculation over whether some tight end is going to be available to play on Sunday or how much playing time a bench-sitter is going to have now that the power forward is going to be trying to keep up with a 7-footer next Thursday.
FM, No static at all...
AM630 reception sucks in NoVa FM 105.9 is good out into WV. The early morning crew is always changing Then Chris Plante, Rush, Larry O’Connor, Mark Levin
I do the same and have found 105.9 signal goes further west and south.
Oh, it gets worse... Stephen Smith is replacing Rush Limbaugh.
ESPN is getting rid of their Spanish
language ESPN Deportes radio (but not TV).
In NYC that means the basic English language ESPN will wind up on WEPN 1050 AM there.
In Boston Entercom does local sports talk on WEEI-FM.The AM side of the station is
all ESPN—owner gets paid to run it.The AM side gets tiny ratings. This way ESPN can tell advertisers their spots are airing in
Boston, NYC, DC etc.
ESPN can have some play by play (including teams from other than their own city; playoffs, etc.) but listeners may be able to get games via satellite radio or other services, anyway.
