Austin's police chief says new homeless laws will "fundamentally change" enforcement

Austin's police chief says three new homeless ordinances are about to "fundamentally change" the department's enforcement. Early Friday morning the Austin City Council voted to rescind the homeless camping ban changing the city’s approach to dealing with homelessness.

The city's ban on sitting, lying down and camping in public spaces is being replaced with new ordinances that change how police can respond to calls from the public.

“If we receive a call from a business owner or from a citizen involving an individual that may be sitting or lying in a public space, whether it be in front of a business or on a public thoroughfare, we would have to be able to prove that conduct poses a hazard or a danger to someone,” said Austin Police Chief Brian Manley.

Friday afternoon, Chief Manley said the wide sidewalks on Congress Avenue and around the UT campus and entertainment district are an example of where enforcement will change.

“There may be opportunities now for individuals to erect a structure or a tent or some type of protection in spaces where before that would not have been allowed,” said Manley.

As long as the public could safely get around the tents, the structures would not violate the new ordinances.

“I am thrilled,” said Rabbi Alan Freedman.

The Rabbi at Temple Beth Shalom in West Austin says the changes decriminalize being homeless.

“They found a way to revamp these ordinances so that people who are homeless are not being arrested simply for being homeless,”

Fast-forward, Austin folks. Typhus, cholera, ‘urban campers,’ poop on the sidewalk - heading your way. Sentimentalism vs laws that make sense. Which will it be?? Ah, yes, FEEEEEEELINGS.

Rabbi Freedman - from a temple 8-miles from downtown Austin and in a totally gated community can afford to be "thrilled" - it's all at other people's expense. As the following link shows it's also completely fenced in an guarded: LINK

I predict Austin’s “homeless” population will increase.

I would love to know how many Austinites are originally from Austin and how many infiltrated the city like cockroaches.

The Rabbi and the current walled-in hypocrite Pope should feel very ecumenical about so much.

Austin figuring out how to drive productive taxpayers away while encouraging drug addled bums to set up residence in public spaces. What could go wrong

The leftist students, who complained for years about being harassed by panhandlers and got the city to pass a law forbidding panhandling on the sidewalk bordering the campus, now will have to walk around the tents. Too bad, lefties.

I can see UT enrollment dropping.

The LIEberals never learn. LA and San Fran sheetholes and eyesores not to mention the potential for diseases to profligate—no none of that matters to these lunatics.

I wish my Texas city would print up promotional materials of the benefits of being homeless in Austin and provide free Greyhound tickets to Austin to anyone who wants them.

My brother was sleeping in the park. Daytime. Next thing you know paramedics and cops show up. Someone called in thinking he was dead. Do it often enough it gets expensive.

How many of us pull up at various intersections in the nation with so called beggars with signs mining the drivers for $. Most of them are able bodied and some even have nice clothes. Nope.

Sneak in a truckload of plastic straws, and surreptitiously plant them in or about the bums. That lights fix it.

We haven’t been to Austin in 11 years and were amazed at the increase in bums and vagrants we saw when we were there Monday.

Just imagine if/when recreational marijuana is allowed in Texas. These problem will proliferate at least 10 fold.

Leftist dems; turning one city after another into a shithole. Poop central. Crap fest. Or as Reagan said using a manure pile as a democratic platform to build on. (Paraphrasing) That’s the kind of foundation leftists use.

No wonder they have the maturity of a toddler.

thank god for liberals in Texas. now maybe California will get some relief from the homeless congregating in my state. now maybe instead of heading to loss angels and the surrounding parts of my state the homeless will flock to Austin Texas where the homeless can set up on any public space private or public with out fearing removal when it hampers the use of the space by others.

Real simple: Declare Austin a public health hazard and send in the state guard to clean it up. If Austin Nazis interfere, arrest them. If state judges object, arrest them, too.

If you want to live in a civilized society, it has to be clean.
