City teachers fleeing New York at an alarming rate: report
NY Post ^ | June 24, 2019 | Selim Algar and Aaron Feis

Posted on 06/25/2019 10:58:44 AM PDT by EinNYC

A staggering 41% of city teachers hired during the 2012-13 school year left the system during their first five years on the job, according to a new report.

City Comptroller Scott Stringer said Monday that turnover among fledgling educators shell-shocked by the city’s public schools is wrecking classroom continuity — and he called for a new “residency” program to stem the exodus through improved training.

We have always known that only about half of new teachers are still in the NYC school system after 5 years. Either they can't hack it, once the stars have fallen from their eyes that they're going to "change the world", they were discontinued due to rank incompetence, or they got a much better offer from the suburbs. Now, the Bored of Ed in NYC is playing games with their tenure; I saw many letters on many young teachers' desks saying "We are not able to grant you tenure this year; better luck next year". That is a major discouragement, because tenure means you have some protection against capricious adverse actions against you.

Several years ago, under the disgusting POS Bloomberg (may he die a horrible and painful death, soon), education was turned into a business model, forcing teachers to take highly variable input (students) and create from that a uniform product (educated graduate). He adopted the Danielson punchlist, so that teachers were to be evaluated on the basis of whether their lessons fulfilled a punchlist including dozens of points---an impossible task. He adopted Commie Core. He hired dozens of lawyers to form a "gotcha squad", running into classrooms to catch teachers out. Then DumblASSio came into office, along with his commie agenda. Cell phones were now allowed in classrooms--so there was no possibility of lessons being listened to, with predictable dismal grade results -- of course, the TEACHER'S FAULT. He forbid teachers to discipline students, especially those of color or Hispanic---classes were totally disrupted, no point even writing a lesson. Talk about the futility of the Myth of Sisyphus...

Even veteran teachers would be utterly discouraged by having their hands tied, yet expected to deliver sterling results from students who know they can do anything and get away with it. And constantly being under the gun fearing charges would be leveled against them based on students' utter lies, statements fabricated to get tough teachers in trouble or even fired. This was the empowerment of lazy do-nothings by Bloomberg--the power to "get back" at those horrible old teachers who insisted on a quiet orderly classroom and assigned work being handed in--they were terminated on the basis of student lies.

Who would want to stick around for this?

I sometimes wonder just how stupid Democrats are: the teachers unions are their greatest contributors. They are going to make the profession such a misery, word will get out as it did in the mid 70s: don’t become a teacher. Major in something else.

Guess the city fools can’t figure out that the schools 1) have no discipline, 2) have no discipline, and 3) have no discipline.

Not that I respect any NEA member, but I’ll give them on a break on the vermin (not all, but many) they have to try to teach.

Public teachers unions are one of the most powerful democrat voting blocks and campaign contributors in NYC.

No democrat could win without their support.

Now eat your peas.

Only one solution for failed inner city schools - school choice and competition. The poor children, many Blacks, have no way out unless they can escape from thee awful schools and get into non-union schools with discipline and order.

Don’t mean to sound liberal but they didn’t start out as vermin.

If you or myself raised them they’d be just fine.

Addict mothers or whore mothers and no father sealed their fate.

Where liberals and I DIFFER is that society MUST punish them EARLY and OFTEN until they either get sick of it or decide they like it and go to prison for life.

I live in flyover country. Minot, ND. Pop about 45k, which make it a major metro - LOL!

My wife is a Para who works with the special needs kids in the school system (Autism, Down syndrome, ect) There’s at least a dozen teachers who left much higher paying positions in the big cities to come out here to the country and teach, and it’s always the same story. Less pay, but far less stress, and so much happier, and the cheaper cost of living makes up for less pay. You can actually buy a house. No gang activity, few unruly students, farm families that actually care and are involved in their kids education, Principals who will call parents in and let them know exactly what’s going to happen if something doesn’t change.

You get the idea. A much smaller school system, more parental involvement, more personal relationships. Happier teachers/staff.

I'm not surprised that new teachers can't last five years because of everything they're saddled with right off the bat, combined with the fact that there are fewer people to mentor them because the senior teachers are either retiring or being pushed out.

No one wants to place a senior (expensive) teacher in their school (and in their budget) when they can get two newbies for the same price, then use 'em up, burn 'em out, and replace them with fresh ones.

I agree with your point. Let me add that a lot of these kids have moms who gave birth at 14-15 years old, then had 4-5 kids before they hit 25. In some cases, grandma is about 30 YO. Neither the parents nor the children ever emotionally or psychologically progress pas their early teens. You can see this in their lack of impulse control, entitlement attitudes, and general lack of understanding for correct decorum.

Not to excuse the behavior and the culture, but it contributes.

I’m sure the recent decision to not lock up and charge students who commit crimes will really attract new teachers. Now, they’ll get to teach these lovely future astronauts.
