It is beautiful, but since it is not subversive or edgy or offensive, people hate it...
Renoir was edgy for his time. His use of light in hie Impressionistic works and his subject matter, ordinary scenes from life especially urban, were radical for the time.
Is that Vampiras mom?
It was subversive for its day.
It lacks the “finished” level of detail of the academic works, which were done on a whole other level of painstaking skill. The point of impressionism is the impression. The old realist stuff you can get lost in. One of those guys would have rendered that satin dress almost photographically, but more gorgeous.
“It is beautiful, but since it is not subversive or edgy or offensive, people hate it...”
I think that is the issue.
Renoir also gets an unfair reputation of being anti-Semitic. No, he hated a Jewish guy named Charles Ephrussi (a well-known art critic of the time) and said crappy things about Ephrussi, including slurs about being Jewish, which were typical of the French.
