My question is, why don’t they make the game less boring by making the field smaller?
I have no idea.
Field lacrosse is okay, but they have indoor (”Box”) lacrosse that is on a smaller field with boards. (Literally a hockey rink with astroturf on the ice). It is a lot faster paced - more hitting - pretty intense stuff.

That was already tried, it sucked when it was played indoor.
