Broccoli sprout compound may restore brain chemistry imbalance linked to schizophrenia (glutathione)

Researchers say they have characterized a set of chemical imbalances in the brains of people with schizophrenia related to the chemical glutamate. And they figured out how to tweak the level using a compound derived from broccoli sprouts.

The researchers found on average 4% significantly lower levels of the brain chemical glutamate in the anterior cingulate cortex region of the brain in people with psychosis compared to healthy people.

Glutamate is known for its role in sending messages between brain cells, and has been linked to depression and schizophrenia, so these findings added to evidence that glutamate levels have a role in schizophrenia.

Additionally, the researchers found a significant reduction of 3% of the chemical glutathione in the brain's anterior cingulate cortex and 8% in the thalamus. Glutathione is made of three smaller molecules, and one of them is glutamate.

"We are thinking of glutathione as glutamate stored in a gas tank," says Thomas Sedlak, M.D., Ph.D. "If you have a bigger gas tank, you have more leeway on how far you can drive, but as soon as you take the gas out of the tank it's burned up quickly. We can think of those with schizophrenia as having a smaller gas tank.

For their study, published in April 2018 in Molecular Neuropsychiatry, the researchers recruited nine healthy volunteers (four women, five men) to take two capsules with 100 micromoles daily of sulforaphane in the form of broccoli sprout extract for seven days.

They found that after seven days, there was about a 30% increase in average levels in the subjects' brains. For example, in the hippocampus, glutathione levels rose an average of 0.27 millimolar from a baseline of 1.1 millimolar after seven days of taking sulforaphane.

Sulforaphane is found in a variety of cruciferous vegetables.

There may be some simple nutritional options to curb aspects of schizophrenia. Betaine from beets and glutathione from mushrooms would be worth exploring.

It’s VERY possible that certain foods can help.

As for me, I was on a number of SSRIs for a while from depression after a brain injury.

It was getting pretty bad until a doctor put me on Wellbutrin, which is an SRNI, I think.

I KNOW Wellbutrin is different in that is a DOPAMINE reuptake inhibitor and NOT A serotonin inhibitor.

Now some docs are saying it’s dopamine deficiency responsible for much depression and schizophrenia and NOT serotonin.

t would make sense in my case because Dopamine producing parts of my brain were damaged in the injury.

It has helped greatly. It is called the poor man’s cocaine but you needs a LOT of it to get that kind of high. A LOT.

As an aside, doctors are now saying that dopamine doesn’t cause pleasure, it just makes you want to seek out things that have brought you pleasure.

But without getting into detail, i am personal PROOF that dopamine causes pleasurable feelings.

Ah, what the hell. We’re all adults here.

I felt NOTHING during sex before Wellbutrin.

When I started taking it, I felt like the old me before the injury in that department.

So if there is NO pleasurable feeling during sex without the dopamine booster but pleasurable feelings WHILE taking it, is it indeed a pleasure neurotransmitter?

I dunno :) Seems that way.

So when moms say... ‘Eat your veggies’, you better eat your veggies... Hold it... Was it mom saying that or just those voices in my head.

On a serious note, curing this disease would be a real breakthrough. Many schizophrenics are very creative and their contributions to society, despite their maladies, have been enormous.

I appreciate all the posting you do on alternative health. It is THEE key to being healthy, not just a component of it. I have done huge research on magnesium, iodine and of late, low stomach acid. Mag makes 350+ other nutrients, enzymes, systems, etc., sync and fall into place. So, it goes to reason, that if you’re low in mag (and all of us are) then things will be out of whack that can’t be fixed but for mag.

Iodine is crucial for the thyroid and all reproductive organs, as well as every cell in the body.

I have come to believe now that no supplementing will have any benefit if you’re low in stomach acid. 95% of the population is low in acid, not high (but the symptoms manifest as high). When you’re low in SA, you can’t break down nutrients and absorb them.

Therefore, I really work on raising SA so that all the nutrients will be way more available.

raising SA includes supplementing with HCL, drinking vinegar, taking bitters, doing salt and a few other things.

A friend of mine I graduated with in chemistry was analyzing dialsyate of schizophrenics in the ‘eighties. Seems if you put schizophrenics on dialysis some of them become completely lucid in a matter of weeks.

Never heard how the research turned out.

God gave us all we need to be and stay healthy with a plant based diet and a healthy lifestyle.

A teacher once told us that each of us is an entirely new and different person than we were 7 years ago.

I thought that was maybe far fetched, but then I heard that each and every second the human body replaces millions of cells.

In other words, each second we are slowly replacing ourselves little by little, so that in 7 years our bodies have replaced every living cell and we entirely different than we used to be.

The problems come from what we give our bodies to repair, rebuild and replace ourselves with.

In these times, we have trained ourselves to prefer artificial, man-made in a laboratory, inorganic chemistry instead of the God designed and made, organic chemistry found all around us in natural, whole foods.

And the ways we trick our minds into liking these man made, artificially flavored and colored foods is with salt, oil and sugar, or their imitations, compounding error with even greater error!

It can take years for our inner systems to clog up and fail, but healing can take place rapidly *IF* and when we simply go back to eating God’s stuff, the raw materials our bodies are designed for.

N-acetylcysteine is a readily available supplement found at any vitamin store that also has been shown to be precursor to glutathione and raises its level in the body. It also appears to have additional effects against mental illness that go beyond it just increasing glutathione.

There’s been some fascinating research done on broccoli in the area of longevity and even reversal of aging.

Dr. Rhonda Patrick knows a lot about it- some podcasts she’s done with Joe Rogan go into it in-depth. I think the broccoli substance is called sulforaphane.
