California newspaper scrubs story speculating Tyler Skaggs overdosed
NYPost ^ | July 7, 2019

A California newspaper said it has received multiple threats over an article speculating that late Los Angeles Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs died of an opiod overdose — leading it to scrub the story from its website.

The Santa Monica Observer reported soon after Skaggs’ death that the 27-year-old pitcher — who was found dead July 1 in his room at the Hilton Southlake Hotel in Texas — may have been getting opiod prescriptions from multiple doctors who were unaware of each other’s treatments, Deadline reported.

Texas police quickly denied the report, saying there was no information yet that suggested an overdose or suicide.

An Angels spokeswoman also blasted the article as “categorically incorrect” and said the “reckless reporting from Tyler’s hometown paper is disappointing and harmful.”

Same "paper" claimed RGB was near death... or very very ill.

In Wisconsin we now have a law that certain medications must be reported to a central database and a doctor must consult this database before prescribing certain meds. Of course the wealthy and powerful can get scripts in other people’s names.

It does seem like it should be known by now why a 27 year old athlete died. If it’s a secret, they should say that. Is a family under any obligation to divulge this information?

Same in Michigan. The database supposedly includes every prescription you’ve ever gotten for a “controlled substance.” As a result most doctors won’t even prescribe them any more because using the database is such a PIA. I almost had to beg my doctor for tramadol but I get them sparingly. Thirty 50 mg pills every 90 days. That’s enough.

Lol, I saw that when I broke FReeper tradition and read the article. I like the NY Post.

Seriously, even though it’s a coroner’s case and a public figure, I feel the family should be able not disclose the cause of death.

The Santa Monica Observer tends to take what is reported elsewhere and embellish it beyond recognition. The less polite term for this is plagiarism. They are not credible.

"The Santa Monica Observer" is not a legit newspaper/source. It's a total fake news website that posts stories like "Ruth Bader Ginsburg near death" and the classic John McCain To Resign Senate Seat on the 4th of July. Cindy McCain Offered his Seat.

Why oh why do people keep falling for this? Might as well post The Onion, it's the same thing.

Their story is changing too. I remember them claiming that cocaine was found, now they are talking about prescription opioids. This is needlessly cruel rumor mongering, they should wait for the autopsy report to come out. Santa Monica is where Skaggs grew up, you’d think they’d act better.
