July 13, 2019 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

I have an unheated greenhouse. It's situated in the garden and I can use it from March-May to get things started, then again from October or so through early December for hardy winter greens.

From June-September it is over 100 degrees in there every day it's sunny. Beau says I should grow succulents then. We made the shelving out of cinder blocks and aluminum grates that Beau scavenged from a worksite at one point. We'd need to run electricity out there for heat, but I kind of like working with my wits and the elements to see what works.

I’m growing out Peonies for one more season before I plant them in the ground and one lone Dahlia in pots right now. I have been feeding them with liquid Tiger Bloom or Miracle Grow when I water; I make a lighter solution because pots need watering every day...and probably 2x a day with our upcoming Heat Wave! The lilies I planted earlier are REALLY behind the curve, but mine have buds now, too. My established ones JUST bloomed - and were promptly trampled by the Puppies. :(

I’m waiting for another Jung Sale email and then I’ll dive in, LOL! Right now I’m busy plotting at Kohl’s.com between 30% off and a $10 gift they gave me for my Birthday Month!

Too hot to garden this time of day, but it’s never too hot to shop online!

Is this a great country or WHAT? :)

Super. I’ll water them with miracle grow every once in a while. I didn’t want to burn them up. Never grown lilies before.

I’m waiting for a jung sale to get some winter beets. Hopefully there’ll be a sale before my planting date for those arrives or i’ll have to just get them full price.

We’re very happy with the trees and grapes we got this year. The trees have all leafed out beautifully even though they weren’t planted till the first week of June. And every lily sprouted except the one I broke the stemmy part off of when I was planting them.

Now I’m waiting for July payday so I can order my garlic for this fall. I usually plant stuff from foreveryong because they carry a lot of ‘warm winter’ varieties that don’t mind that we have mild weather compared to you guys.

I’ll eventually have a dedicated Garlic Bed (we have room for 6 more 4’ x 8’ beds) but since I had some failures this season, I have a temporary place to tuck them in for the winter.

My garlic faves are Northern White and German Porcelain. Mild, but with good garlic flavor and huge bulbs.

We got so much rain last winter I’m going to have to put my garlic in a raised bed. Had I planted garlic last fall where I normally plant it it’d have drowned.

Hopefully I’ll get around to that before it’s time to plant garlic :/

Hopefully I’ll remember to get shallots. I did plant those out and they did, of course, drown.

Beau did most of the work, but I was, ‘Number One Go-Fer’ AND...we’re still talking to one another! :)

We’ve also survived fixing up, painting both 100% and readying TWO homes for sale, plus the consolidation of our current home within a 6 month period, so putting together a greenhouse was comparatively EASY. ;)

I haven’t seen a rabbit in years here in our garden on the shore Humboldt Bay but my current weapon is a slingshot with marbles as ammo on other critters. We are having some of the best weather in my 86 years.

When seated on haunches the top of rabbit’s head is about 12 inches off the ground.

So decent sized....easily bugget than a whole chicken you get at the grocery store.

Nice greenhouse.

I have an 8x12 greenhouse with the peak ridgeline being about 11 feet high.

The automatic roof vents make a big difference.

I just got this reclaimed greenhouse up after getting for free from a construction site where it was to be bulldozed 8 years ago.

I already want to double the size so I can grow much more stuff indoors.

I have been using reclaimed wooden shipping crates as planting beds.

I get the crates for free from industrial area of Seattle.when the businesses toss them out on the curb.

They are tall enough that rabbits cannot get in them, I don’t need to bend over and break my back as everything is a little above waist high.

I line them with weed blocking fabric and then fill em with some good soil.

The crates are just shells with 90% of the sided being open so the weed blocking fabric is what holds the spil inside.

My tiny patch is starting to look awesome...each year a few more perennials, a few more rocks, a few more flagstones! :-)

Maybe introduced Eastern Cottontails. Might at least be good to eat. The Brush Rabbits are horrid little beasts.

I let the brush get the better of some of the yard. The cats must not have been able to catch the rabbits. The cat I have now seems to think she’s mostly ornamental, so I may have to resort to weaponry.

Nice. "Decently and in order." You must be diligent in weeding and or have a good mulch! What about the 4-legged predators?
