There’s something wrong about that statement. While no parent can guard against accidents and misfortune, they can educate their kids about drugs. I mean to the”fear of God” level, where the kid may hate the parent but knows enough to say no. I did stuff I shouldn’t have but I also said no to a whole bunch more, and the reason was I knew better and was afraid of what my parents would say if they found out. Decisions have consequences.

Most adult behavior works that way and the job of parents is to train their kids to become functional adults.

What’s wrong about my statement?

Sure, parents can educate their kids about drugs and anything else, but that does not change the simple fact that each of our lives is in our own hands, subject to the consequences of our own choices, and sometimes one bad choice is all it takes.

Every child is going to come to the crossroads of drug use in their life, and the decision of how to proceed is theirs alone, and so are the consequences.

That is why you set the barriers very high. Allow no drinking without personal supervision. Marijuana usage punished like it is Heroin. Pre-16 YO dating not allowed. 16-18 YO under strict supervision of dating. Early curfews, check out their friends parents, disallow sleepovers you cannot be sure of...etc. Kids are going to break the rules, let them do it by smoking a little pot or drinking some beer. If you allow pot and drinking, they will step over a different line...Cocaine, meth, heroin etc.
