I think the ‘heat index’ / feels like temp is a media construct to help persuade people that otherwise typical summer highs are unprecedented temps and confuse them into believing that global warming has raised temps 8 or more degrees above temps people vaguely remember from years ago.

Exactly. Not like the NYC area has never seen temps like this, never mind the heat index. Some reporters think everything’s gone down the memory hole though.
