Is the new 'fasting' diet trend healthy?
Medical XPress/JAMA ^ | March 22, 2019 | American Heart Association News

Time-restricted eating is one variation of a hot diet trend that also includes intermittent fasting. According to Krista Varady, an associate professor of nutrition at the University of Illinois at Chicago, there are several types of intermittent fasting, including one meal per day, the 5/2 method, which involves five feast days and two days with restricted calories, and alternate-day fasting.

"With alternate-day fasting, people typically lose 3 to 8 percent of their body weight over three to 12 months," Varady said. And it can work with both low- and high-fat diets.

Weight loss is not the only benefit. In a 2009 study, most of the study participants also saw reductions in the so-called "bad" LDL cholesterol and in blood pressure. Other studies show decreases in insulin resistance, which is associated with an increased risk of Type 2 diabetes. And diabetes is a risk factor for heart disease.

But those who use time-restricted eating can lose weight without restricting caloric intake, said Dr. Satchidananda Panda.

"The science and the benefits of time-restricted eating are very different from those of other forms of fasting," Panda said.

According to Panda, time-restricted eating is based on the science of circadian rhythms, which control every hormone.

Panda also has shown that fruit flies placed on a time-restricted eating plan have hearts that appear to be 20 to 30 percent younger than their age would suggest. Fruit fly hearts and human hearts are similar.

"It works by slightly reducing ATP producing proteins of mitochondria in the heart and keeping the mitochondria healthy, which reduces oxidative stress," Panda said, noting that time-restricted eating gives the body time to repair itself. "Most of our studies are showing that the effect is on multiple organs and on the central nervous system. It's a positive feedback loop.”

Eat the exact same amount of food, but only within an eight hour time window, and lose weight, reduce blood sugar and cholesterol, and get healthier in other ways, too.

Eating all the time was said to boost one’s metabolism, but it creates a chronic condition in which our bodies never properly garbage collect waste products from cells and proteins.

Let's not go overboard here. It does not give you Carte Blanche to just eat whatever you want. You'll undo most of the benefits if you eat junk, even if you manage to lose weight. The good news is that when you have a limited window to eat, it actually becomes a challenge to get those calories in. Instead focus on getting your nutrients in, especially Potassium and Magnesium.

I’m getting to where I can probably every other day.

Cutting bread and the like has made craves to eat go down a lot.

I have been eating one ketogenic meal a day (eat only between the hours of 5pm and 8pm) for several years. Best decision I have ever made! Fantastic combination: Keto + Fasting

Being on a Keto diet makes doing IF easy. Your blood sugar stays on an even keel so you really don’t get hungry.

I generally do 18-6 (8 PM to 2 PM) which is basically just an early dinner, no breakfast and a late lunch, I try to do OMAD at least two days a week.

Cutting carbs has increased my appetite for fruits & veggies.

Go figure :)

I’m a fan of OMAD (One Meal A Day). It’s quite amazing, actually. I always want to eat in the evening anyway, so it works out great. The problem is the social consequences. I go to a lot of meetings where food is brought in for lunch. I’m a cheapskate, so my policy is, if lunch is free, eat it. :)

Actually I eat more veggies than ever, since I’ve been on Keto, especially Avocados (yes I know it’s a fruit!) and Brussels Sprouts, I generally grill a bunch of Brussels Sprouts with my steak, yummy!

3 months now, lost about 20 pounds, and all my blood work is great, and the blood pressure has gone down back to normal from pre-hypertensive.

Best of all, I can eat when I want, not when I have to, where the only options available are junk.

I’ve been One Meal A Day, OMAD, for years.

Hard for the first two week, but then a total snap, plus you really enjoy your food, when you eat that one time.

You don’t realize how addicted you are to needless eating until you have switched.

Should kids, teens, or young adults do it? I don’t think so, no.

That jerk Twitter CEO eats NOTHING all weekend, every weekend. He’s tooootally into it, makes me look like a noob.

But now I understand why so many middle-age people are walking around, totally fat and disgusting.

You just do nooooot need that much eating, no way. I think A LOT of eating is owing simply to convention and peer pressure.

You go from 3 to 2, and then go along that for a time. Then to 1.5 or so, until it’s finally what it needs to be:

ONE.

A few months ago I did a five day fast. After the first two days it was easy peasy. You do have to take some mineral supplements, though. I was going for 30 days but my wife was out of town and she threatened to come back early if I didn’t eat. She was afraid she’d come back to a skeleton stripped bare and a well fed Maltipoo.

"Cutting bread and the like has made craves to eat go down a lot."

When I decided to lose a lot of weight 12 years ago, cutting out all liquid calories and cutting WAY down on all starchy carbs (bread, potatoes, pasta, rice, etc.) worked wonders. Also a lot of exercise. Granted, I've come to believe that weight loss is 70% diet and 30% exercise, but when I'm exercising regularly I notice I didn't have the cravings to snack at night that I used to. I am also more motivated to stick with the proper diet. There's a real synergistic effect between diet and exercise.

Always better to exercise in a fasted state, the body produces Ketones when it runs out of Glycogen, and the brain actually functions better on Ketones, which is why people actually feel sharper mentally when in a fasted state.

Fasting is really stupid. Biologically, humans have not been equipped for fasting for 50,000 years or so. Calorie reduction is the only way to lose weight.
