Heavens to Betsy. You mean the science on scooters isn’t even settled yet?

"The paper found that scooters do produce about half the emissions of a standard automobile, at around 200 grams of carbon dioxide per mile compared with nearly 415. But, crucially, the researchers found in a survey of e-scooter riders in Raleigh, North Carolina, that only 34% would have otherwise used a personal car or ride-sharing service. Nearly half would have biked or walked, 11% would have taken the bus, and 7% would have simply skipped the trip. "

Sounds like my 14 y.o. Turbo Diesel m/t vehicles beat them like a drum.

My wife commutes on a Xiaomi Mi365 that I recently bought for about $350. It takes her at most 10 extra minutes each direction since traffic by car is unpredictable, but it saves $11/day in parking plus gas, mileage and wear and tear on the car. So, the scooter will be paid off in very little time.

I can’t really blame Bird for their eco-marketing. Lots of companies make dubious marketing claims. Whatever helps close the sale.

What does she do about carrying luggage? The average scooter looks like it only has enough space for the rider.

Diesel vehicles get about 30% better mileage because diesel fuel has about 30% more carbon, thereby giving better mileage. Indeed, that’s why the makers of most cursing sailboats have gone from gasoline auxiliary engines to diesels. More carbon = more power.

Ban Them!

I’m tired of having to turn around to see if one of those f’ers is coming towards me.

I’m not sure of 30%, mostly I’ve heard 10 to 20% with BioDiesel being less.

Part of the benefit of Diesels is a higher CR and no throttling losses.

Having a m/t allows easy coasting and even manual engine stopping in the City.

I recently bought a new Turbo gas vehicle similar to my brace of Turbo Diesels.

The Diesels win the real world FE test hands down.

The new veh does have AWD, so there is that.

One of the big assets of the diesel is at idle. A diesel only has to inject the amount of fuel into the cylinder to get the engine to idle at its targeted idle speed. Without the A/c running and a bunch of electrical load that can be very low.

A gasoline engine has to maintain a stoichiometric ratio (fuel and air) to run properly. Too lean and it burns itself up.
Too rich it fouls itself and the catalytic convertor. The extra energy goes out the radiator and exhaust.

A diesel will cool down significantly at idle.

“no throttling losses”

Not asked, but answered...

Electronic Decel fuel shutoff is awesome, even with Diesels.

Injecting/Burning NO fuel is quite efficient.

The a/f ratio is important too.

An analysis of open data from Bird’s inaugural fleet in Louisville, Kentucky, conducted by Quartz last year, found that the average scooter lasted just 28.8 days.

I think that this finding is already outdated. The real number is closer to two weeks on average. Venture capitalists are finally waking up to this reality and they are starting to recognizing that they are never going to get the return that they were hoping for.

I tend to shut off all vehicles at a light if I know the cycle is longer than 60 seconds.

just like electric cars

the carbon footrpint of its manufacturing is substantial - especially the batteries

they also likely will be scrapped faster than most electric cars (who need declining batteries replaced every few years to add to their carbonfootprint)

These scooter batteries may have an even shorter lifespan due to more flawed maintainability

"A diesel will cool down significantly at idle."

That's why my Diesels have heated seats.

If you don't get above 30 mph in the Winter, the thermostat will NEVER open.

Jet airliners burn Jet A because its energy density per pound is much greater than gasoline. Jet turbines could be designed to burn gasoline. We do not do this due to weight penalty. The greater energy per pound of fuel is the criteria. We burn Jet A and not gasoline nor god forbid ethanol.

That’s smart usage. These one-way trips where someone has to drive around picking up scooters and returning them after charging really cuts the efficiency. Not to mention adding to abuse and short lifespan.
