PINSON, Ala. Randa Ragland opened her mailbox in late July to find a letter from a neighbor, with no return address and no name.
Just words hurtful ones.
The letter accused Ragland of not caring about her Pinson, Alabama, home.
Your eyesore is affecting the resale value of OUR homes, it said. Do better!!!
So many things, bad things, had happened right before I got the letter, Ragland said. I just didnt have the energy to be mad.
Her husband lost his job. She received some news regarding her health, and her 3-year-old son was battling cancer. Jaxen, who has autism and is nonverbal, was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma just a few days before his third birthday.
Ragland decided to post the letter and Jaxens story on Facebook, asking people to try being kind to your neighbor and to say hello to people.
But she never could have imagined the kindness that came next....

Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle. - Socrates
Some people did the right thing this time. I wish Trump would get on this story and tell everyone about it and say “Some people did something good, Americans did.”
Who wants a high assessment until time to sell?
Fifty years ago all the women in the neighborhood knew each other and so would have known about the situation and stepped up to help. Now we are very isolated.
damn.I thought it was just my screen.
Tissue box alert.
This is the kind of story we need more of on the airwaves Amen.
She most likely would be better off living on a smaller property, one with far less foilage and landscaping to maintain.
She would also be better off if her son didn’t have cancer. Whats your point?
This is awesome, now finish the Job and go Back to the Neighborhood with signs that say:
WE HATE KIDS WITH CANCER
And stand out in front of her neighbors homes until somebody confesses, publish their Names and Addresses, where they work.
Sounds Harsh right? I am willing to bet My quarterly Contribution to FR that the Whiney Complainer is a Proud Liberal Progressive.
If you want to dictate how a neighbor keeps up their home and yard, then buy into a neighborhood with a homeowner’s association. Otherwise, STFU or offer to help.
Agreed
Women are not home
Yep. And I think the handwriting is male.
Went through something similar with neighbors and our old HOA. Lost my job, savings and then went to work more than full time, kept thinking things would get better. Couldn’t afford to move or sell (down market at the time) or pay for maintenance I knew it needed, kids too young to help. Wouldn’t have cost much but when your busted every cent counts. Yard needed some improvement but not much. But HOA and JA neighbor pounced weekly. Finally climbed back up the rope & moved away to no HOA, better neighbors, better house and back on our feet praise the Lord! Wish I was more handy I ouwld love to help out some neighbors with things.
Now that’s a testament to your determination not to give up. HOA’s can be very punitive and dangerous for anyone with a temporary downturn, or people who wake up one day to find that they are suddenly too old to take care of the place as they used to. The HOA boards are like the cool kids in high school slamming the geeks into lockers, only weaponized. I’m so glad you escaped. I never want to live in an HOA again, either.
Right. Women were the glue that held a neighborhood together. Its different now.
In more ways than one...
No HOA here, and my neighbors are polite, but I've caught some eyerolls and dirty looks shot my way a few times. The problem is their lawns are perfect, whereas grass doesn't grow in my yard. My kids and I always wished we lived in the woods, where their friends live and where mossy front yards are expected. But here, where we do live, our property stands out like an eyesore. I simply don't have the money to fix it up. A serious illness, then a divorce set me back years ago. I've taken every job that would hire me, but every time I save up some money, the car or something else breaks down. But, oh, well, that's life. All we can do is our best...
