One Sunday morning I was driving in my car and turned on the radio to hear some Classical Music. Well, at the time, the only station that played “Classical” was NPR, and when I tuned in, the familiar strains of a Tchaikovsky Symphony filled the car.
As the last strain of the masterwork faded out, the typical snooty voice of the NPR announcer extolled the music and then said:
“For our next selection on this very special program, ‘The Great LGBT Composers’ we will hear a piece by the great British Gay Composer, Benjamin Brittan.”
Then he proceeded to drone on and on about Brittan being “gay” blah blah blah, as if it was his sexual proclivity that had endowed him with his talent.
Now, I knew about Tchaikovsky, who also suffered from severe Depression, but it never affected my enjoyment of his music. I never cared for Benjamin Brittan’s music, but had no idea that he was a homosexual. Schubert was never one of my favorites although I liked some of his work, but I had no idea he was a homosexual either. And I have ALWAYS hated Aaron Copeland’s music never realizing that he was a homosexual AND a COMMIE to boot!
By focusing upon the composer’s sexual preference, NPR was doing a HUGE disservice to the memory of the great Classical Composers and their legacy.
Not only that, they were “outing” men who had chosen to keep their sexuality a secret, and since they are now dead and gone, can neither refute nor defend themselves.
NPR is EVIL.
When, back in 1964, I graduated High School, I had often heard the word “queer” but we just thought it meant some weird kid.
i remember several weird kids in school, but none of the turned out to be fags.
What a wasteland. They don’t teach this in Russia or China.
Will that include medical history? Cause being truthful about the spread of HIV and AIDS would certainly have to mention the contribution of part of that alphabet to the epidemic.

Outrageous! Why more people aren’t homeschooling their kids, I don’t know.
Well, as they consolidate power, we can certainly expect more of this. It would really seem that these states, given their sick ‘values’, gun laws, taxes, and other costs of living, simply don’t want people living there who are middle class or upper middle class.
And yet most people on our side unfortunate enough to have gotten stuck in those states STILL are not making nearly the level the effort they could to get out. [hint, the unemployment rate in the US, including red states, is effectively zero at this point]
All that I can say is DO NOT WAIT TOO LONG - as your options may start to disappear before you even know what’s going on, as happened to 10s of millions of people in the 20th Century.
Oh, but wasn’t there that letter from Lincoln saying he shared a bed with another man? (Yes, that’s evidence, but not proof).
Also,I’ve heard it claimed that Sonja Kovalevskaya (Mathematician) was gay because she married a man she dldn’t love to get an exit visa to complete her education.
Buchanan did have a girlfriend but she died. I think “evidence” on a lot of historical figures is going to be shaky.
