Richard Gere, Italy's Salvini clash over migrant ship

LAMPEDUSA, Italy (Reuters) - Hollywood star Richard Gere on Saturday urged the Italian government to stop "demonising people" and instead help migrants who have been stranded on a Spanish charity boat in the Mediterranean for more than a week.

Gere, who visited the Open Arms ship in a show of support on Friday, joined a news conference on the Italian island of Lampedusa to call for the 160 migrants stuck on the boat to be allowed to disembark.

He compared the political situation in Italy, where League leader and Interior Minister Matteo Salvini has repeatedly refused requests by migrant ships to dock, to that of the U.S. administration of Donald Trump.

"We have our problems with refugees coming from Honduras, Salavador, Nicaragua, Mexico... It's very similar to what you are going through here," he said, accusing politicians in both Italy and the United States of demonising migrants.

"This has to stop everywhere on this planet now. And it will stop if we say stop," he said, adding that he only wanted to help people and not get into a political fight.

Italy's League leader and Interior Minister Matteo Salvini quickly responded:

"Given this generous millionaire is voicing concern for the fate of the Open Arms migrants, we thank him: he can take back to Hollywood, on his private plane, all the people aboard and support them in his villas. Thank you Richard!."

The “poor huddled masses” coming across the southern border may not be so poor after all. Swiss journalist Urs Gehriger recently visited African migrants who breached the border and hung out on the streets of San Antonio, Texas, waiting to go elsewhere in the country, and he met hostility from people who didn’t want to share details about their experiences, conflicted each other, and had rolls of $100 bills. In a recording played on Fox News, Gehriger asks a migrant from Congo how she got to America. She refused to say.

As Gehriger continued to ask simple questions, he said they backtracked and “were not answering at all.” “They wouldn’t tell me anything about how they got here, and then they started to get aggressive and they were contradicting each other,” he told Laura Ingraham. “One said they ran through the forest, and another said no, there was no forest, and they were actually arguing among themselves,” Gehriger said. He said they started to get “aggressive” after questions about money and help.

Gehriger believes the illegals were coached on giving answers to authorities. “I had the impression that somebody told them not to speak about it,” and acting like “now we’re here, you have to help us, give us money.” “What I found from an aid worker there, they actually do have money. Quite a few of them, because he spotted them under a tree, right in front of the shelter, counting a roll of money with hundred dollar bills,” Gehriger told Ingraham. Hundreds of migrants Congo and Angola were transported to San Antonio the week before, and city officials say they received no warning from the feds that they were coming. KENS published a story showing dozens of people milling around downtown, saying they arrived at the southern U.S. border by way of Ecuador. ETC...

I understand from research and an Italian acquaintance the island of Lampedusa was settled by about 5000 inhabitants. They lived their lives for many years in peace after WW2. A massive influx of "refugees" seeking entry to Italy has changed a way of life forever.

The Italian Government set up a massive holding camp for them. This to allow a process of sorting out their claims. Most could be described as economic refugees. They have broken the fencing a few times and surged into the community. Troops deployed to protect citizens.

Women are said to be unable to walk the streets alone at when dark. The lady I know, said that life for the peaceful citizens of Lampedusa has changed for ever. The Government ships some off to another island occasionally. Once on the main land they vanish and do not report to the immigration authorities. This when they have to appear to state their case.
