Treble, I have tried 4 browsers, 2 of them being new installation.
The reason Mom stays with AOL is because of email. AOL is long term memory so she has to problem remembering the steps in reading and sending email, bookmarking favorites and several other functions. I have always had other browsers available on her PC, mainly for me to use when there visiting her. Other people are able to access FR from AOL, so there must be a different reason.
Yes I have tried other devices connected to her WiFi, my phone, my iPad, a Nook, they all will load Free Republic. And I live 15 miles from her so I have to use the same ISP and I can load FR.
Was your issue the same, that you could get other websites, but FR would not load? If so, let me know. Maybe I could then convince Comporium, her service provider to bring her a new modem. In our small town, they are the only option, and they provide their own combo modem/router in the hook-up.
Hi hoosiermama. I could not get back over to Mom’s apartment yesterday or today. BTW, do you know that when we moved from Atlanta to our retirement home up one NC mountains, that Mom also moved from Birmingham to a lovely senior facility in the little town Just 15 minutes from us. Anyway, granddarlin’ started 5 yr old kindergarten this week. They used a staggered start where a third of the kids come each day for 3 days so on a kids first day there are only 6 kids in classroom. So he started on Wednesday, making Thursday and Friday his days to not come. Crazy, huh? But it was good for the little ones who had never been away from mom all day. That left those 2 days though that he needed a babysitter.... Mike watched him yesterday morning while I went to Bible study, but I had him afternoon and all day today.
Going to try to get over there on Saturday. Most of the suggestions mentioned have been ones I already tried, that I found on google or the comporium rep walked me through. They are baffled too. They admit that this is a relatively common problem that crops up now and then, but normally they can fix it. They are telling me to take the computer to a repair place. There is only one place in town and he is expensive. But we may have to do that. I’m going to try the 2 suggestions on Saturday that are ones I haven’t done yet, then I guess we go the repair shop route.
Mom and I would love for you to visit. I have plenty of guest rooms and we are in a lovely scenic, quiet spot in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I’ll FReep-mail you the location.

Marsha, I knew you were both in NC. Have many friends from high school and both a niece and a nephew who have relocated there. All in different areas. It one state I’ve not visited but always thought I would like to. Might just take you up on that. Do you still have a daughter in Colorado?
Oh .BahBah’s second twin was married this summer. I’m friends with her on FB. They used one of the pictures I took of her standing in water — tide came in as she was looking out to sea (at the ruins in Mexico). If you remember she died the Mother’s Day they were all shopping for attire to wear to the first twins wedding.(She has a beautiful granddaughter from that union that I occasionally see pictures of).
