Younger Adults Drive Decline in America's Divorce Rate; But More Seniors Are Hopping Off The Bus
NewsWeek ^ | 06/21/2019 | Tera R. Jordan

Fewer and fewer Americans are getting divorced, with the rate falling 18 percent from 2008 to 2016.

Among American adults, there is support for divorce when couples do not get along. Women, people from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, and adults who have experienced divorce personally or among friends and family are especially likely to be accepting.

Despite this growing acceptance, the divorce rate dipped again in 2018. The decline began in 1980 or 1990, depending on the data source and experts. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the number of divorced people per 1,000 Americans fell from 4.7 in 1990 to 2.9 in 2016.

Who is driving this downward trend? Adults age 45 and younger.

Young adults are being more decisive—in not only the timing of their nuptials, but also in their choice to marry in the first place.

Many of these younger adults choose to marry after they have achieved their desired levels of education, established careers and stabilized their finances. They also want to be "bonded" with a mate based on love, friendship and common interests, not social obligation.

In the U.S., the average age at marriage has risen, from 26.1 for men and 22 for women in 1890, to 29.8 for men and 27.8 for women in 2018.

I am a human development and family studies scholar who has spent 20 years studying intimate relationships. In one study, I examined the perspectives of 52 married black men. Achieving their goals relative to education, work and finances was a significant factor in deciding when to marry their wives.

My neighbor is 79 and divorcing his wife of over 50 years.

Perverse government incentives.

If his wife needs nursing home care, they will basically be impoverished by the cost of her care until they are left with nothing and then Medicaid will kick in.

If he divorces her, she gets half of their assets the nursing home drains only her of money, Medicaid kicks in and he gets to keep his half. With the help of a lawyer he probably gets to keep more than half.

Another perverse incentive the government puts on the elderly is Social Security.

Married SS benefits are less than the benefits the same two wage earners would get if they were not married. So, it pays people approaching retirement to get a no-fault divorce and live together as husband and wife without the paper. The government has made marriage a losing proposition for older adults who have no intension of having kids and few religious qualms about sex outside of marriage.

Social Security as well. The people stay “married” but the piece of paper has been cut. These couples can run into issues when medical decisions are needed but the spouse is no longer considered legal “next of kin”!

“I don’t get it.”

Sex has stopped, man is frustrated so he looks for another mate. Believe it or not, it really is that simple.

Oat Straw (Avena sativa), whole or extract, helps many women. It does not promote testosterone production, but tends to free up bound testosterone.

It is also a nutritive herb that is exceptionally nutritious and safe for regular use.

Women have less testosterone, but more receptor sites, than men.

There is a reason for the old adage about sowing wild oats: Wild Oats, a.k.a. Milky Oats, a.k.a. Green Oats, are that herb.

Same reason it’s called Horn Goat weed for men or Mannish Water I guess

Wild Oats became Whole Foods...a place that sucks up my money like Neiman Marcus does

My Yogic Cowgirl wife who’s practiced it for 25 years and to her credit has a great figure because of that eats nearly all her food from there

It ain’t called Whole Paycheck for nothing

Trying to get a femalion to do anything about sex except on their terms is a challenge once they pass 40

I could have the magic elixir that makes her purr and undulate with desire like girls do at times

And she’d still resist it

Cause I’m suggesting it..lol

I can hear it now

“What I’m not good enough for you like I am” or “is that all you think about “

Or “ I’m older now it’s not the same”

My refrain is “but you look like you’re 35”

This is an old battle many men experience and most often lose

Women are most randy I’ve found when they want a baby in them.....

They will wear you out like insects do

Use up the male and then eat him for nutrition

simply not bothering with that piece of paper and simply choosing cohabitation.

Such 'relationships' appear neither in marriage nor divorce statistics.

The problem with divorce stats has always been that it invariably includes people who are serial divorcers. When you have someone marrying/divorcing 2 to 3 or more times, it really skews the stats.

Breaking out the first-marriage divorce stats makes a huge difference. I believe that divorce rate has consistently been quite low.

Well, yeah. They’re hooking up or shacking up. Not many of them are getting married. It’s obvious in the “village” around us. They don’t even have the motivation to build mud huts and are living with their single parents or in ever larger groups in rotting houses.
