Weekly Garden Thread August 24-30, 2019
August 24, 2019 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

I’ll be planting LOTS of perennial flower seedlings this fall and winter in our Hurricane Michael-ravaged area.

Question . . . what is the best deer repellent? No bunnies, just deer.

Second question, do any of you all have experience with the Park Seed bio-dome system?

Got hit with black spot....Pulled some tomato plants after stripping off the tomatoes. Sprayed rest of the tomatoes with baking soda, veg oil and Dawn. It’s suppose to protect the leaves. Seems to be working.

My lavender has hit a late summer bloom. Later this week I will be able to harvest. I am taking out my lemon grass today. Great easy grow plant but took over and my other plants I put in the same pot aren’t doing so well.

Discovered homemade refrigerator zucchini pickles last week. I was wondering what to do with all that dill (besides dill seed). I will be making apple and pear cider vinegar with my largest ever crop of undersized fruit.

The future of food: Why farming is moving indoors

“Ten shipping containers dominate a corner of the Brooklyn parking area, each full of climate control tech, growing herbs that are distributed to local stores on bicycles. This is urban farming at its most literal.

The containers are owned by Square Roots, part of America’s fast-expanding vertical farming industry, a sector run by many tech entrepreneurs who believe food production is ripe for disruption.”

I personally like the idea, and hydroponics is great for SOME things like salad greens and herbs, but I’ve yet to see anyone grow nutrient-rich veggies on a large enough scale in this way, such as tomatoes or peppers (Lycopene, Vitamins C,K and E, Calcium, etc.)

Please correct me if I’m wrong!

12-foot fences topped with concertina wire, patrolling Dobermans and a 24/7 manned machine gun turret.

We’re a helpful lot, aren’t we? :)

My tomato plants really took a beating this season between cool temps, RAIN, cool temps, RAIN, and then some more RAIN. I was able to pick enough for a few batches of V-8 juice, today, but it’s nothing like the bumper crops I’ve had in other, drier years.

Lots of disease for me, too, though part of that is trying different tomatoes this season and some did not old up well.

Oh, well. luckily I know where the Piggly Wiggly grocery store is! ;)

Great use of the small fruit! I just might have enough apples for a pie (singular) this season. The ‘Liberty’ and ‘Haralson’ are loaded this season; my other varieties - bupkis!

I finally have enough cukes again to make Pickle Relish; I’ll bet I could sneak some zucchini in there too, and no one would be the wiser. ;)

I’m down to two small jars and was starting to panic, LOL!

I spray with a solution of clorox and water after supper. That works too if you need a backup treatment plan. (8oz regular clorox or 5oz clorox concentrate + 1 gal water in pump sprayer)

I’ve not used that particular one, but the cells in that are good for the deep-rooted wildflower plants that you’ll be growing. :)

The other thing that’s worked for me, prophylactically, is spraying with a solution of distilled water and ‘great white’ inoculant (Amazon, elsewhere). That covers the plant with good microbes that can fight off the bad ones.

If I’ve got a really bad case I will spray with the clorox solution after supper and then spray with the microbes early in the next morning.

I grew a whole row of heirloom tomatoes here in lower blightlandia last summer and didn’t lose a single one to any sort of foliar disease. Although Alvin and his buddy chipmunks undermined a couple...neighborhood cat took care of them.

Ooo, lavender. I bet your yard smells fantastic!

I’m reminded to grow lavender next year. I just forget to order any.

EEE and West Nile Virus have recently been discovered in this area. The plan is to spray on Monday evening. Until then, time spent in the garden will be severely restricted. Some horses had to be euthanized, sadly.
