Over two decades, they managed to dig more than 7.5 miles down into the Earth.
However, in 1992 they had to stop drilling because the temperature was around 180 degrees Celsius, which was far hotter than the scientists predicted it would be.
If you fell down the hole, it would take around 3.5 to 4 minutes to reach the bottom.

Of course the quality of Looney Tunes is far above the 1958-59 Felix the Cat cartoons. He has to get credit for having cartoons (rarely broadcast, but easily found on YouTube) from the 1920s. I believe that the cartoon is at least [artially responsible for the term "Pointdexter" used as a nickname for a brainy nerd/geek type.

I was never very good at physics but I think it’s 32 ft/per second acceleration, not speed.
So you drop it and it goes from 0 Ft/Sec to 32 Ft/per second at the one second mark.
Another second later it’s going 64 feet per second.
Of course as speed increases you get wind resistance and I believe as you get closer to the center of the earth the 32/ft per second per second starts to vary.

A falling body accelerates at about 33 ft/sec/sec, but will quickly reach a terminal velocity due to air resistance (120 to 180 mph for a human body)

Amoco Oil drilled a 29,000 + foot exploration well in southeast Iowa back in the 70s. They found Leaverite. So they left it where they found it.

No expert like a few here, but 350 C = 662 F. There would actually be two sources of heat, The ground temp plus the friction on the drill tools. Combined it more than likely brings steel up to the minimum temp of 450 Celsius-848 Fahrenheit required for recrystallization annealing making it too soft.

You know, that's an amazing video. The guy that actually went to hell says in his book,
23 Minutes In Hell: One Man's Story About What He Saw, Heard, and Felt in that Place of Torment, by Bill Wiese, says that the hole to hell that he fell through is about 35 feet wide - pretty close to that video.
The book is worth a read. God doesn't not want anyone to go there and wants to warn (NOT condemn) people from going there by receiving Jesus.

Nope I am wrong... lol 180 C still hot enough with the added combined friction heat to anneal and take the strength out of steel though.

Maybe I should dig such a well under my home. I’ll have free heat all winter long. And when I want to cook a turkey, I’ll just send it down there in a cooking basket with a remote thermometer and pull it up when it’s ready.
To: Openurmind
350 F, 180 C, but I guess friction would push it up pretty good. It must or they’d be out there drilling...

Even with the mud pumped through trying to cool it and lubricate it, the friction of the bit alone is actually still quite high.

Yes looks like issues with the drill head.

????The article says 180 C, not 350???
But the added heat of drilling must have been a problem.

Leaverite is a slang term used by geologists, mineralogists, archaeologists, and amateur rock collectors to identify a specimen in the field that may look interesting or valuable but is not.[1] Rocks identified as such are generally left where they were found, as there is no reason to attempt to remove them. The term leaverite derives from the phrase "leave 'er right there".[2][3] - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leaverite
