“...why we can perceive the flashes in a blinking traffic light, but we don’t see the frame-by-frame action in a movie...”

A small minority CAN detect (or at least be bothered by) the “flashes” in cinema. Fortunately, I’m not among that small group.

You know something which fascinates me?

I have a Russian 7X30 binocular. It is the real military model and exceptionally sharp optically. It has a very unusual focusing system. It has individual focusing eye pieces which is not unusual in military binoculars. That is more sturdy and easier to make waterproof.

The unusual thing is that as you focus an eyepiece it has a slight zoom function. If your eyes require different diopter settings, as mine do, then one side will have more magnification than the other.

The amazing thing to me is your brain will combine the two sides into the same magnification without your even knowing.

What about liberals, what is their mathematical model? 1 + 1 = 63?

“We can see Trump is racist using the insane logic that he’s never criticized someones race before like we do every day when it comes to white people! Why we even mandate criticizing the white race in New York city schools but nobody says that’s racist because we are liberals and if you criticize us for being racist that means YOU’RE racist!”

This would explain much of liberal ideas:

“A lot of the things you think you see you’re actually making up,”

Does the NYT know about this theory?

Coincidence....

I was just researching this at 3 am this morning... Rod photo receptor neurons are stimulated by white light while there are three cone photo receptor neurons. One each for long wave frequency (red), medium wave frequency (green), and short wave frequency(blue.)

My mind was comparing this to the frequencies of consciousness and the combinations creating a standing wave of white light, an intrinsic attribute of higher frequency consciousness and enlightenment.

Typical 3 am thoughts for me. I wake up downloading this info in my sleep.

The real question is

“Why are the eyes the windows to a person’s soul?”

Is it the bipolar neurons in the eyes allowing a reflection of consciousness outward as photo re emptor information goes inward?

They hope to decipher, for example, why we can perceive the flashes in a blinking traffic light, but we don’t see the frame-by-frame action in a movie

Because the frequency of the traffic light is less than the frequency you see at. Likewise, for most people, in a movie the frame is refreshing faster than the eye does. But, it also has to do with motion, interlaced vs progressive, luminance, and a whole bunch of factors. Vision is really crazy complex

For a visual area roughly one-quarter the size of a full moon, there are only about 10 nerve cells connecting the retina to the visual cortex.

I thoroughly HATE stupid analogies. What the hell does "one-quarter the size of a full moon" mean? Why can't a somewhat technical journal just specify area in square inches or millimeters or use some technical measurement?

The moon has a total surface area of 14,647,440 square miles. At full, half of it is illuminated. One-quarter of that is 1,830,929 square miles. Is the author saying our eyeballs have a visual area of 1.8 million square miles?

Or is Hartnett saying that the subtended arc of our vision is 1/4 of the arc of the full moon? That can't be as we would all have tunnel vision.

Good article. The summary would seem to be “Vision is impossible, yet we have it.”

I don’t know. For not receiving much information from the eyes, the brain seems to divert much attention to visual input. At any time you are watching a speaker, and your eyes wander to another focal point, the ears quickly disengage. Stare out a window, look at an email, or just look at a table on a handout, whatever transpires audibly during that diversion is backburnered.

Those who have been abused by illogic in politics have known the above for eons.
