A new report has found that in the top 100 Hollywood films from 2007 through 2018, only 4.5% of all speaking characters were Latino, far out of step with the US population.
The study, titled Latinos in Film: Erasure on Screen & Behind the Camera Across 1,200 Popular Movies, found a dearth of Latino representation in Hollywoods top movies of the last decade, both in front of and behind the camera.
Published in association with the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, the National Association of Latino Independent Producers and Wise Entertainment, the report outlined the prevalence of Latino erasure or misrepresentation onscreen despite greater diversity efforts in recent years. For the top 100 highest grossing films from 20072018, for example, only 3% featured leads or co-leads with Latino actors. Of those roles, 49% went to female actors, and five (of 17) went to one actor: Cameron Diaz. Other top-billed actors included Jessica Alba, Eugenio Derbez and Jennifer Lopez.
Despite all of the talk about diversity and inclusion in Hollywood and the popular press, these findings represent no change in depictions of the largest ethnic group in America, the report said, noting that the 4.5% of speaking roles for Latinos is 13.8 percentage points below representation in the US census. Latinos comprise an even higher percentage of Hollywoods home state 39% of Californias population, and 49% of Los Angeles.

So they play 90% of the mute roles?
Why are we bean-counting anyway?
What percentage of Albanians were there?
Uh, oh!
Racist Hollywood!
Not Trump’s fault this time. Or, maybe it was?
And whites are underrepresented in the NFL and NBA. What is their point?
2007-2018, Obama’s fault.
“Badges? We don’t need no stink’n badges.”
IOW,the swill that Hollywood puts out means nothing to me.
How many transgender Latinos?
I resent the fact that an American Indian played the part of the king of the Rock People in FLASH GORDON CONQUERS THE UNIVERSE!
They should have used a real member of the rock people.
Desi Arnaz was doing just fine back in the 1960’s and other than an accent (both sides of my family’s grandparents had accents)who cared? Good actor and great series (I Love Lucy)!
So was the Cisco Kid and Zorro.
Saw Flesh Gordon in the 70’s.
“Why are we bean-counting anyway?”
LOL
Well the over supply of Blacks makes up for it.
At Times commercials seem to be 50-60% sometimes approaching 90% Black. Even being cast in so many regular shows they even have some which are all Black.
Mixed race couples seems to be all the rage now. I am nearly certain that you see more mixed race in ads than not.
the percentage is not as great in TV programs but still way more than would be representative of real life.
Even programs like The Smithsonian which I would think would go to great lengths to be accurate in every respect have Sub Saharan Blacks running around in 1000 AD England and France.
You know why that is? Because the other 95.5% cant speak English .
My give-a-crap-o-meter is barely twitching.
Im sorry but there are just so many roles out there for maids and drug dealers.
There’s only so much of George Lopez people will take.
How odd...I’ve never thought of Cameron Diaz, Jessica Alba, Eugenio Derbez or Jennifer Lopez as LATINO actors. I just thought of them as plain old actresses and actors.
How color blind of me. I must be a latent racist at heart to not see special identity groups everywhere I look.
