Buckeye Nation, of course, takes great pride in letting everyone know that they are THE Ohio State University at nearly every turn, and the university is simply looking to protect that brand of self-identification.

Related to your jesting of the University of Southern California, years ago, when I was a graduate student at the University of Washington, USC was annoyed about people calling them Southern Cal so the SID sent out information about acceptable terms to call their athletic teams. One of the terms listed was “Women of Troy.” The student paper picked this up immediately and habitually referred to their football team as the Women of Troy. Kept it up for years, even though most people probably didn’t know about the origins of the practice. Might still be using the term, I don’t know.

I only wish my Alma Mater reversed the order of the words, so that I could answer where I went to college with, “F.U.”

There’s a college on Vancouver Island that wanted to originally call themselves “Juan de Fuca University”.

Then they realized the name would likely be cropped by the students to “Fuca U”.

They used a different name.

I was watching a gymnastics match. I noticed they were calling the Georgia girls “the lady dogs”.

I thought to myself, “that doesn’t sound very good”, then it struck me. What the alternative was.

I used to work there.

Spoiled children, the staff even more so than the typical student.

When I was an undergraduate at the University of Idaho, we would remind the University of Montana Lady Griz basketball players what a female bear is called.
