ANECDOTE: Vets stadium. Lakewood against Wilson for ‘67 Moore league championship. 4th and 10 for Lakewood, 3 minutes left and trailing 28-26. Dale Didur dives and catches a pass for 10 yards and 1 inch. Lancers drive for the go-ahead touchdown, but Wilson, led by Bobby Grich, drives relentlessly toward Lakewood’s goal line. As they are about to score, my brother causes a fumble recovered by a Lancer, preserving the 33-28 victory in what is still the most exciting game I’ve ever seen.

Wow. I will yield to your superior memory. I must be conflating two games. I definitely remember the Rae fumble that cost Lakewood a game.

I was in the ninth grade and went to several games that year at Vets stadium (within walking distance of where we lived).

Never realized that was Bobby Grich playing for the Bruins in that game, but it certainly makes sense.

El Rancho High School joined the Moore League in 1967. Previously, El Rancho was in the Pacific League. Their 1966 team, arguably the best high school football team in the entire US, blew out my alma mater, the Whittier High School Cardinals 48-0 despite the best efforts of our quarterback—and future USC star—Bobby Chandler, so we were glad to see the El Rancho Dons depart.
