We had to read it in the 10th grade. I was not really into reading but I really liked it.

It has been called the greatest novel ever.

It was a good novel, but I think “Bleak House” was better. “Tale of Two Cities” also showed Dickens can write about more than heroic (or at least decent) orphan children.

I can't remember what grade I wa sin when we read it. The books we used to read it had illustrations from the movie, so I have always thought of it in black and white. I didn't expect to like the book, but it was great. I love the David Lean movie!

Director David Lean's other Dickens adaptation Oliver Twist made two years later in 1948 is my favorite Dickens movie.

BBC often does great versions of Dickens’ works, but they messed up on “Great Expectations” when they stupidly cast Gillian Anderson as Miss Havisham. Not only did she play her as weak, ethereal and wispy, but she wasn’t wearing one shoe. What MADE the description of her was that she was always wearing one shoe.

I agree. Anderson wildly miscast in that role. What's more, from the way she played the part, it looked as if she'd never read the novel.

I also love David Lean’s opening scene from Oliver Twist....his young mother, heavy with child,
struggling, fighting the elements to get to the workhouse in time to give birth.......where she died.

Dickens was a great writer, one of the best in the English language.
