Margaret Atwood: Anti-abortion states should pay women who give birth
The Hill ^ | SEPT. 20, 2019 | Jessica Campisi

Posted on 09/22/2019 9:56:52 AM PDT by Morgana

Margaret Atwood, the bestselling author of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” said Friday that states passing anti-abortion laws should pay women who give birth.

In an appearance on The View, Atwood notes states are rolling back abortion rights, saying, “You’re approaching a state in which women are essentially being conscripted or drafted the way you would be conscripted or drafted into the Army … they get their food, their lodging, their clothing, their medical — all of that coverage.”

She added: “If you want the state to claim ownership of women’s bodies, you should pay.”

Atwood’s comments come after multiple states — including Missouri, Georgia and Alabama — passed restrictive anti-abortion laws amid a national debate over Roe v. Wade.

Atwood’s novel, "The Handmaid's Tale,” was published in 1985 and takes place in the Republic of Gilead, a dystopian U.S. society in which women have been stripped of reproductive autonomy and are forced to give birth. Atwood penned a sequel, “The Testaments,” which was published Friday.

Many have drawn comparisons between “The Handmaid’s Tale” and rhetoric from the Trump administration, including Atwood herself.

We do! It's called welfare, section 8 housing and WIC and child support or otherwise known as #babiesforbenefits.

99.9% of the time those are the worst mothers on planet earth.

I personally love this idea. not for the same reasons she’s advocating it as she’s a baby killer. but I have no problem helping women that have children. gives a contrast to killing it

Don’t forget our tax code. Every woman is paid to have children.

And child credits on their tax form. They get paid time off work and her coworkers have to take up the slack and then she never returns. We have to foot the hospital bill when they skip out. Those without children are forced to pay for her kids’ education on their property taxes. Some colleges are already “free” to families under $75k (where’s my refund?).

My first thought was the same as yours! Democrats already DO THIS to women! Who are more ‘conscripted’ than Democrat-Voting women and their illegitimate offspring, than those on the Democrat Plantations? Yeesh!

Used to love her as an author. I’ve read all of her books up until ‘The Blind Assassin’ when she started opening her mouth about politics.

Shut up and entertain me!

Abortion is being, once again, confused with “birth control”.

Birth control is the PREVENTION of conception. There are several ways to accomplish this, by hormone control, by sterilization (removal or tying off the ovaries), a means of intercepting sperm BEFORE it gets to the ovum, or, by gosh, by total abstinence.

Once conception has occurred, a whole new set of ethical concerns kicks in. It is not yet viable, live-apart-from-the-womb, independent life, as no matter how the body design for the assurance of propagation of the species is designed and refined, there are all manner of ways the progress of the fetal development may be interrupted or terminated. There is a point, however, and it is being found at earlier and earlier stages of the pregnancy, that the fetus CAN survive outside the womb. Part of this comes from advances in medical practice of obstetrics, and part of it is sheer determination that the newborn WILL survive.

Once the newly delivered infant can breathe and maintain heartbeat on its own, withdrawal of life support in other facets of its development are tantamount to infanticide.

And that is a CRIME in the statutes of just about every jurisdiction throughout the world.

Nope. We already have that system both in pro and anti abortion states. It’s called “child” aka matriarchy support. In NY it goes to age 21 mandatory.

and why isn’t “Crystal” working full-time?

Women who have abortion should pay a child rearing tax to mothers perhaps.

Children are their own reward. Children are a blessing; not a curse. This is very sad and shows Democrat contempt for God’s creation.

Yes, and they’re expensive to raise. We need more children, as a society - not least in order to fund their parents’ social security. Like Singapore, we should have government financial programs that help people have and raise children.

Whatever her motivation, government should promote procreation. Singapore does it. Russia is starting to do it.

Without more kids, we need more immigrants. In fact, the open-borders crowd makes precisely that argument - low birth rates require high Third World immigration.

Free meals at school too, courtesy of the taxpayer. I know that most of these so-called parents are just mooching yet another freebie. I’m sure they are not going hungry themselves and can provide all meals for their kids.

How about paying young women who are medically-proven virgins on their wedding night.
