Facebook will test hiding ‘Likes’ on its own site
Engadget ^ | 09/26/2019 | Edgar Alvarez

Posted on 09/28/2019 5:43:19 AM PDT by BenLurkin

The company has now officially started a test that will remove public visibility of Like, reaction and video view counts from people's posts and ads across Facebook. This is going to be happening only in Australia, though, and Facebook told Engadget it has not decided whether the test will expand to other places in the future.

If you're a Facebook user in Australia, this means that while your friends and family will still be able to like and add emoji reactions to your posts, they won't be able to see how many others interacted with it. The same goes if you want to see how many people liked a post from someone you know; that information on counts will now only be visible to the author of a post, who can still see the number of Likes or reactions their posts are getting, it just won't be public. "We will gather feedback to understand whether this change will improve people's experiences," a Facebook spokesperson said.

Facebook has said before, it wants its apps to be a place where people can comfortably express themselves and focus on the quality of photos and videos they're sharing, rather than the amount of Likes or reactions they get on a regular basis. With its latest test, the company's now hoping it help it create a healthier atmosphere all around, on its site and Instagram -- although it does present a problem for social media influencers, many of whom have built business models based entirely around Likes and the clout that comes with them.

“We will gather feedback to understand whether this change will improve people’s experiences,”

Translation: “We’re going to see if we can get away with this.”

There is some politically correct reason for this, but I can’t figure out what it is.

But it shows that FB is manipulating everything we say or do on FB.

This will prevent people with whom Zuckerberg disagrees from using facebook as a means of disseminating truths which Zuckerberg doesn’t like.

it is so that they can stop ideas that aren’t cool with the facebook socialist agenda from trending or looking like they are popular. They will show likes for ideas they agree with and hide likes for ideas they don’t...just like they do with comments. If they like your comment, it still shows, if they hate it... a user has to find that light grey “more comments” link.

Can’t have thoughts spreading around election time can we?

Then I’ll just type it out in a comment whether or not I like or dislike something.

Then they can ban comments.

Then I’ll just post a pic of like or dislike.

Then they can ban pics.

Make them destroy themselves one piece at a time.

it just won't be public.

This is another way for the parasitical power structure to control the masses. They will be able to hide the popularity of beliefs that they don't like.

“There is some politically correct reason for this, but I can’t figure out what it is.”

It’s to keep folks from getting their feelings hurt if the negative votes outnumber the positive votes. Discus did a similar thing a few years back. Only “up vote” tallies are now publicly displayed...”down votes” tallies are hidden to everybody...including the person getting voted on, even in their own private account. I think the down votes are still used to push a comment up or down in the “best comments” or “worst comments” categories, but you can’t see the math.

Personally, I think any time a reader hits the up OR down button, the commenter being judged should get a “participation trophy” icon added to their comment.

Problem solved.

More data gathering on the sheeple. It doesn’t matter to our overlords if we like it or not. The like button is liked by fb users so if they don’t drop fb then fb will know it has gained even more power over the weaklings.

Likes are reason many use FB. I hear people talking about them all the time.

Last month my son posted a picture of my husband with an antelope he shot, it got 850 Likes and guys talked about the animal and girls were amazed at the number of likes.

It’s just more evidence that Facebook really doesn’t give a shit about what their users think (what else is a “like” but a statement of what a user thinks), and in their arrogance they think you shouldn’t give shit either.

Thank you for the ping!

See tag line...

While I’m not engaged in SM other than FR for personal and professional reasons and don’t post on these threads, thank you VERY much for maintaining the list and the ping. I forward ALL of them to the brainwashed minion friends who are either awake, or engaged in providing life details to this data mining op.

Keep up the good work!

FRegards,
J

I think they are running an experiment to see if showing an audience “likes” influences other readers to also react.
