First in war, first in peace and now champions of the National League.
The Washington Nationals defeated the visiting St. Louis Cardinals, 7-4, on Tuesday night to complete a four-game sweep of the NL Championship Series and bring the nation's capital its first pennant since 1933.
Washington will play American League champions, either the New York Yankees or Houston Astros, in the 115th World Series, which starts next week.
The newly crowned NL champions broke open Tuesday night's game early, plating seven runs in the first inning before a raucous partisan crowd at Nationals Park.
Washington faced a threat from St. Louis in the top of the eighth inning with the bases loaded, and the score 7-4, but pitcher Daniel Hudson got out of it with a ground out.

Go, Astros!!
:-)
Congrats to the Nationals.
Cardinals really suck.
The Nationals were the last team I would have picked to win the NL when the playoffs started.
I think it’s ‘their turn’ now, like it was Hillary’s turn.
After all, the Nats have never won a World Series.
Never saw a team hit so little in a championship series. Cardinals embarrassed themselves.
I was surprised the Cards won their conference. Don’t pay much attention to the NL, but my impression was Atlanta would take it.
My preference would be Houston over NY, but the Yankee vs the Nats for the World Series is probably preferred by anyone making money off the ratings.
A NY-DC series is the baseball version of Bernie Sanders and wife in skimpy bathing suits.
Trump just brings winning everywhere he goes. Hockey powerhouse (granted there was Russian collusion) and now baseball. Too bad they suck at football and basketball, but most cities would be happy with 2 out of 4.
Cards were fielding like they were all hung over. That sId, congrats Nats!!!
Astros lead 2-1 over the Yanks. That series might go 7 games.
Yep.
We’re ready!
Go ‘Stros!!
The Senators only World Series win was in 1924.
Well, the Washington Mystics just won the WNBA championship. I dont think anyone really noticed or cared very much.
Go, Expos, go! Oops, I guess they are the Nationals.
Pedro Martinez seemed pleased.
I want the team that went 19-31 at the beginning of the season against the team that had 30 different players make 39 trips to the injured list.
With that rotation and coming in hot, the Nats were a good bet.
Counting the regular season, the Nats won their last eight games, won the one-game playoff, took three from the Dodgers, and swept the Cards. They have won 16 out of 18 games and are the hottest team in baseball right now.
I want the Nationals to win the World Series. GO NATS!!!!
The Nats better hope the Astros finish off the Yankees quickly.
Since the start of the Wildcard, the teams that sweeps 4-0 have only won one World Series.
The Nats will now sit around for week and be cold, while the Astros or Yankees will be fresh.
It probably will.
