It's 3 a.m. and you're wide awake for the second night in a row. You get up and stumble to the kitchen for some warm milk mom swears will put you to sleep.

So why are you eating a bowl of ice cream with a side of cookies?

"It's only the last bit of humanity that we have been able to have food around the clock or food that is high in saturated fats and high in carbs," Hanlon continued. "And our brain has not evolved as quickly as the food choices that have become available."

And that brings us to the bottom line: There's not gonna be a pill any time soon for the sleep-deprived junk-food junkies that we are.

I worked midnights for 23 years. The only things proven to keep you awake overnight are a high carb diet and a buttload of artificial lighting.

If you have plenty of sleep but can’t get the munchies going smoke some pot. Chinese diner with lots of rice will make you hungry also.

The solution to insomnia is a sleep mask.
Pitch black, not even dim light thru your eyelids, stimulates melatonin, the brain’s natural sleep hormone.

I wish I’d known this decades ago. I’m finally sleeping deeply 8 hours. When the alarm sounds, off comes the mask, in comes the sunlight & serotonin, and I’m up.

Also, I don’t eat or drink 3 hours before bed. Makes me want to pee all night.

Food is sleep and sleep is food.

I thought everybody knew that. If you lack food sleep gives you a bit of added energy and if you are short on sleep food provides an energy boost.

Both are short term solutions but they work well.

No way.

My having a package of Oreos for dinner has nothing to do with my having had a package of Chips Ahoy for lunch!

And I always have Sugar Frosted Flakes for breakfast, so those don’t even count.
