Rep. Greg Walden of Oregon, the top Republican on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, announced his plans to retire Monday. In a statement, Mr. Walden explained his retirement wasn’t for fear of losing a reelection bid in 2020. “Based on recent polling, strong fundraising, and the backing of my wife and family, I am confident I could earn the support of 2nd District voters for another term,” he said. “I’m also optimistic that a path exists for Republicans to recapture a majority in the House, and that I could return for two more years as chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. But I also know that for me, the time has come to pursue new challenges and opportunities.”

It’s not that fun to be in the minority party in the House. Low status, no power, but held responsible for every negative thing that happens nationally. Not hard to understand why minority party reps retire at greater rates than majority party ones.

They KNOW we don't want amnesty - and don't give a damn. We are "The Great Unwashed" after all.
They [correctly] bank on the premise that the Dems are so bad we will have to vote for them. Most GOP Senators are "Lesser of Two Evils" choices.
They know that the national party will use its resources to squash any genuine conservative challengers in the primaries.

We have to break the cycle while President Trump is in office or they will give the country away after he is gone.
Those backing amnesty have shown they do not care about the Republican party, they are working to make a permanent Democrat majority.
So this is a fairly left leaning Republican in a left leaning state. Who do you think will win this seat next year? A conservative Republican, a moderate/liberal Republican, or a Democrat?

I couldn’t agree more. DJT has broken the political order and with it he’s in the process of permanently changing the Rs and Ds. The Free Traitors of the Republican party are as passé as the corporate thieves and pretend “defenders of the middle class” frauds of the Democrat party. A pox on both of their houses. I think politics is a perfectly honorable career choice. Because elected pols with deep experience are the only antidote to the unelected bureaucracy* aka Deep State.
New York City implemented term limits. The result? An actual communist, Bill DeBlasio, is currently running it.
Make no mistake. The Deep State would like nothing more than to institute single-term limits for all elected politicians. Paul Ryan instituted 6-year term limits in the House for GOP committee chairmanships. Does he seem like a reformer to you?
* I favor at-will employment for the entire Civil Service. But we know that’s not going to happen. I’ll like to see government employee and teachers’ unions abolished. But that’s not happening either. Bottom line is that unless the civil service is turned into a clone of the private sector work force in terms of job protections (i.e. none except for egregious employer abuse), long-serving politicians are the only people who can balance out their entrenched power.
Strong fund raising translates into a nice retirement nestegg that he will take with him. What a country?
