Biden denied communion over abortion position at Sunday Mass in South Carolina

Biden, a lifelong Catholic, stopped by St. Anthony Catholic Church in Florence on Sunday, but was denied holy communion by the Rev. Robert E. Morey, local newspaper the South Carolina Morning News reported.

“Sadly, this past Sunday, I had to refuse Holy Communion to former Vice President Joe Biden,” Morey told the newspaper in a statement.

“Holy Communion signifies we are one with God, each other and the Church. Our actions should reflect that. Any public figure who advocates for abortion places himself or herself outside of Church teaching.”

As Slow-Joe would say, "this is a big fkn deal" - and it is... not just for Catholics. I don't think this has been done with such a high-profile pol running for office. Could have major repercussions. Biden doesn't want to talk about it.

This priest is brave. Let's see how it plays out

If the Roman Catholic Church is to be consistent, it should do the same for EVERY Roman Catholic politician who VOTED for and SUPPORTS Abortion up to the time of birth.

New York’s Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill De Blasio come to mind.

You’re either a Catholic, or you are not a Catholic.

Priest did as he was told.

It’s all a script.

This is the first time a major pol running for president has been publicly denied communion... that's not even "news?"

I can't donate with stupid moderation like this.

A FReeper had this before the media did and it is slowly getting mainstream media play. Amen to this brave priest who put fidelity with God above political expedience.

I know. I found out last night that a FReeper was the only mention of this anywhere beforehand. I'm not exaggerating in the least when I say that this has HUGE repercussions - not only for Catholics.

And it might have been broken right here on Free Republic - hence the dumbass mod moves it to "general."

Then they wonder why we get mad at them.

Every single Democrat running for president would be denied Communion.

Cuomo was apparently told not to present himself for communion, due to living in an irregular situation with his girlfriend, but that situation is apparently ended.

I don't think DeBlasio is a practicing Catholic.

His handlers.

Commie popie Frankie has already had six years to do to the Catholic church what the Fraud did to America.

Neither were or are incompetent in their duties.

RE: Cuomo was apparently told not to present himself for communion, due to living in an irregular situation with his girlfriend, but that situation is apparently ended.

even if that particular situation is ended, this does not change the fact that he CAMPAIGNED FOR and SIGNED INTO law the most permissive abortion bill in the United States — allowing the killing of babies up to the time of birth!

And to add insult to injury, he ordered the lights of the Empire State Building and The Freedom Tower to light up in PINK at night in celebration of the signing of the bill.

If this UNREPENTANT deed alone would not get you banned from Holy Communion, then I don’t know what else will.

Not disagreeing with you, just providing the information of which I’m aware.

Exactly my thoughts. It’s about time the clergy stood up and put the politicians in their place. I applaud the clerics action. More priests should be doing the same.

I doubt that. The official Church instruction has been to serve these politicians even if you have tangible proof they’ve been voting to fund abortions. That its a matter for their own conscience. This Priest has ruffled some very powerful feathers by standing-up for his beliefs, believe me.

Not sure I agree with this. I'm a Catholic. I've been active in our local Right to Life group for years, and have picketed abortion mills. Still, I think this issue is best dealt with in the Confessional, not at the Communion rail. What's next? Will some pacifist priest deny me Communion because of my military career? Or some gun-hating priest because of my support for the 2nd Amendment? Where does politics at the Communion rail end? This is a road I'd just as soon not go down. Let the priest counsel him privately, not make a public show of it.

My understanding is that Biden is being denied Communion because he publicly supports and advocates for abortion at the same time as he publicly claims to be a Catholic in good standing.

This is a scandal because it leads the general public to believe that it is possible to be Catholic and support abortion.

Because this scandal is public, even if he confesses it as a sin, the reparation/penance must include publicly disavowing the possibility that a Catholic can support abortion. Until this happens, he has not shown a true purpose of amendment and he is not yet reconciled to the Church.

Of course, he should know better than to present himself for Communion in his current state. (As should any Catholic who is aware of unconfessed serious sins) The priest is doing him a great favor by withholding Communion.

“Therefore whosoever shall eat this bread, or drink the chalice of the Lord unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and of the blood of the Lord.”
[1 Corinthians 11:27]

This is a scandal because it leads the general public to believe that it is possible to be Catholic and support abortion.

I'm just a clunky old convert, but we were instructed by our Pastor that public figures have a grave obligation to both support the teachings of the Church and especially not contradict accepted doctrine with the "personal" flavorings, like "I'm personally opposed to abortion, but...[whatever rationalization one might choose to cover over their surreptitious support of abortion]." The gravity of the sin is magnified because the example of public figures could endanger the souls of others if they are swayed by the contradictory example of public figures. One cannot serve two masters. There is no ambiguity here, you either accept the position of the Church that human life is a gift from God and therefore must be valued and protected, or you don't.
