Tammi Jonas, a longtime vegetarian living in Victoria, Australia, had a surprising — but undeniable — craving for a hamburger while pregnant with her third child. Just one prime patty after many meat-free years. Now, she’s a professional butcher and a pig farmer. The 49-year-old stopped eating meat when she was 19 — after reading Australian philosopher Peter Singer’s book “Animal Liberation,” published in 1975. She maintained her V-card successfully through two pregnancies, but while carrying her third child, she also became “dangerously anemic.” After the iron supplements failed, she pondered if protein would be the best way to get healthy for her and her baby. “I was at work one day and just thought: ‘A burger would fix this,'”

In 1990, I had a major car accident. As such, I was hospitalized for 28 days. During that time, all I ate was hospital food, which was full of chicken and fish, but no red meat.

When I came home, my mom saw how pale I was, and started feeding me red meat- hamburgers, steak, sausage, etc. I got my color back in no time.

She probably would have been dead in a decade (or wished she was dead) if she kept on that fad diet (i.e., vegetarian).

She’s lucky to have come to her senses.

“promises to treat their porkers with respect.”

That’s the important thing along with moderation.

Human beings are omnivores — we need to eat some meat, including red meat. The key point is “some” - I think the recommended amount is a standard burger size a day.

Small amounts of meat, lots of veggies and moderate grain is a healthy diet.

What she brings about animals not being abused is also important to me - no battery chickens or pigs kept in cages so small they can’t move. Treat them humanely and give them as good a life as possible.
