A second for what Little Ray said — their beer was more like soup, same goes for ancient Egyptian beer (for the most part).

Regarding beer from ye olde tymes:

“Here sleeps in peace a Hampshire Grenadier
Who caught his death by drinking cold small beer.
Soldiers be wise from his untimely fall
And when ye’re hot drink Strong or none at all.
An honest soldier never is forgot
Whether he dieth by musket or by pot.”

I saw “Barley Mow” (a.k.a. Whiskey in the Jar) performed over 30 years ago, for some reason it made a deep impression on my teetotalin’ ass.
