NFL finds 'no such evidence' of Mason Rudolph directing racial slur at Myles Garrett

The NFL "found no such evidence" that Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph directed a racial slur at Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett just prior to last week's brawl, league spokesman Brian McCarthy said Thursday.

Garrett made the allegation during an appeal hearing with the NFL on Wednesday, sources told ESPN's Josina Anderson and Adam Schefter. Rudolph has strongly denied it.

"Mason vehemently denies the report of being accused of using a racial slur during the incident Thursday night in Cleveland," Steelers spokesman Burt Lauten said in a statement. "He will not discuss this accusation any further and his focus remains on preparation for Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals."

Not only that but QB’s literally spend every waking moment when not actually on the field with their head coach. Mike Tomlin would not take kindly to his QB throwing around the N-word. Just makes this accusation just that much more unbelievable.

Funny. I heard a story from the early 1960's. Some hotshot Quarterback from Ole Miss was a rookie with the New York Giants. He was thought to be the successor to Charlie Conerly and YA Tittle, until he flung the N-bomb ONCE. In New York City, that's not very smart, even in the early 1960's.

He was out of the league in no time.

A player on the winning team, with 8 seconds left on the clock, roughs the passer, then gets jumped on by a couple of guys defending their QB, and THEN escalates to assault? He Could be thrown out of the NFL, he should stop with the lies and be grateful he’s only suspended for the season.

These talking heads are hard to listen to anytime, but with this they’re just trying to keep the pancake on the griddle:

From a former Steelers fan who no longer follows or cares about the NFL: Why is Mason Rudolph QB’ing the Steelers? What happened to Roethlisberger? Just curious, and don’t care enough to search.

QB kicked him in the nuts... and engaged while he was already fighting with another player.

I’m good with Garrett whacking Rudolph with the helmet at some level. I think he should have gotten 2 games and Mason 1 for instigating and escalating the entire incident.

It’s not like he hit him with the actual helmet.

I’m sorry but how could they know what Rudolph said at the bottom of that pile? It sounds like exoneration but I can’t imagine anyone knows one way or the other except the particulars.

I wasn’t as worked up as most here over helmetgate

But I am tired of every fight the black guy cries race

At least Garrett didn’t cry while fighting

I’ve had black guys cry fighting me

Not so much cause i was hurting em so much but just frustration

“Damn this cracker will fight”

They also cry when their brothers won’t join in

Garrett would never have swung a helmet at a black QB.
He is projecting his own race based animus onto rudolph.
Nothing new here.

Gosh, I wonder. The Browns were in the last few seconds of a humiliating loss for the Steelers, and Garrett had a very good game. Something had to have set him off at that point. The sports news casters around here say he's a complicated guy. He's aggressive and tough, but he also sponsors dog walks at puppy parks and writes poetry. I thought the NFL was real quick to put the blame on Garrett before doing a full review of what led up to it.

Who benefitted? Next time the two teams meet, in a week, it's the Browns who will have important players still suspended. Seems the Steelers should not have the instigator(s) not playing in that game.

It is possible that Garrett wouldn't mention a slur except that his whole career is on the line. That being said, I think it's ridiculous that anyone should give a damn about big boys playing a game saying bad things to each other.
