Today’s Cryptogram

XEBC ICEITC SNJY WQCVJ HNQJLCX VQC RNXVWQCCVDTC, SYNTC EJYCQX SNJY WQCVJ HNZCX VQC RCTNWYJOLT. —TV QEZYCOELZVLTR

You can find this little fun word game, to combat early dementia and senility in us baby boomers, in several daily publications.

The way it works is a letter stands for another letter. For example: AXYDLBAAXR is LONGFELLOW (does not apply to today's cryptogram).

Beware, the game is very addictive. If this is your first time, don't be intimidated.

PLEASE DO NOT post the answer in general comments, but DO post your time and any tips you might give the group on how you solve these puzzles as puzzle solvers love to hear how you made out.

You can certainly send your solution to my private reply, or if you need a hint for today’s Cryptogram.

Nice. Common letter, second word, first word, rest follows easily.

Figured the C from its placement in many words, then tried the common three letter word. Finding that a flop, I tried the other common three letter word, and was off to the races.

Shoot. I don't usually try to figure out the author's name first because they're usually so easy to figure out but I just happened to glance at this one and it was a dead give-away.

That was a joke, son. I've never heard of this guy. Or gal. I'm not even sure I got the name right. There's one letter in the name that's not in the quote.

First two words. After that, it’s a clickfest.

You lost me there.

The name is:

TV QEZYCOELZVLTR

The only letters that are not used in the cipher are:

AFKUMPG

None of which occur in the name.

François VI, Duc de < TV QEZYCOELZVLTR >, Prince de Marcillac was a noted French author of maxims and memoirs. It is said that his world-view was clear-eyed and urbane, and that he neither condemned human conduct nor sentimentally celebrated it.

Oh! THAT TV QEZYCOELZVLTR!

No, I meant that the "O" in TV QEZYCOELZVLTR does not appear in the puzzle.

Upon further inspection, the "O" does appear in the puzzle.

Woo hoo! I figured it out!

You’re right, I missed that one. I have a nodding acquaintance with the author, so I filled it in without thinking.

Huh? The only single letters are 3rd letter, 1st word and 10th letter, 7th word.

ICEITC was the hint word.

Ha haaa!!! That’s what these puzzles will do to you. That’s what makes them fun. I do them all in my head.

I used to do them in my head (without pencil or computer) but I’m getting older. The first two words jump out, and once I got them I recognized the author, who is famous for his maxims, iow, quotes.

That sorta explains who Mae West read...

When I’m bad, I’m better.......

The Mae West hint and the long word were key to my stop and go action on these.
