If you take in perspective you would understand that camera angle is not the answer. He is over a foot further away than his dad as indicated by their feet so if anything his image is actually reduced by distance. I agree with the 6’4’ estimate. The same thing happened to me when I was a kid.

I think he meant “American” in the older sense of being of Northwest European ancestry, as were virtually all white Americans prior to 1880.
