This article is pretty thoughtful and deals with surviving a major earthquake in very cold conditions (AK in winter). While cold weather prep is critical to survival, lots of info in this article could also be applied to 'warmer' climes, such as the west coast. Preparing family members, making sure furniture & other items don't fall over (at least not easily - in 'the big one', the walls could come down), looking for safe places to shelter, know where your utility shutoffs are & how to shut them off (like gas), being able to survive if the house is uninhabitable, having clothing, food, shelter (tents, etc.) if none is available & you're on the street .... etc. etc.
I think this article is worth taking a look and modifying to your situation/location.
