Constitutional Amendment? Piece of cake! I can think of at least 45 state legislatures that would approve.

Not on that one.
Politicians are loathe to give up power, and that would be the ultimate ceding of power. State legislators who say that they support amendments abolishing the electoral college are cut from the same cloth as Federal House of Representatives members who claim they would support an amendment enacting strict term limits.

As pessimistic as I am about the GOP, I can't. There are at least 17 state legislatures that would vote this down.

Really? Only five state legislatures would vote for their state to remain relevant in Presidential elections? I can think of at least 20 who would reject such an idea—and all it takes is 13. All of those fly overs states with 3 to 7 EVs. Then there’s the problem of getting 2/3rds of the House and 2/3rds of the Senate to vote for the idea before it even gets to the states.
