Roxette singer Marie Fredriksson has died aged 61 after a 17-year battle with cancer.
The Swedish pop star, whose most iconic hits included It Must Have Been Love and Listen To Your Heart, passed away on Monday morning and her bandmate, Per Gessle, said 'things will never be the same.'
The musician retired from touring three years ago on doctor's orders, and is survived by husband Mikael Bolyos and their two children, daughter Inez Josefin, 26, and son Oscar, 23.

May she rest in peace.
Roxette was, quite literally, the biggest musical act to come out of Sweden since ABBA.
“She’s Got the Look” was part of the soundtrack during my days as a first year university student in about 1989-90, lol.
I’ve been enjoying her songs on the oldies radio everyday, never knowing that she was suffering. RIP.
‘Must Have Been Love” was based on an old Swedish Christmas song. If you listen to the structure, you could imagine it fitting the Holiday Season like a delicately jeweled glove.

I was privileged to see Roxette on their last full tour. I went to Toronto from VA to attend the concert. Marie was having movement and balance problems, but she was great. She had a long struggle with brain cancer.
I have all the Roxette albums as well as a collection of Maries solo albums in Swedish. RIP.
Cancer is a thief. Deepest sympathy to her family.
Always loved the song “Joyride”
Thanks for the tip. I will give it a listen. It is horrid that she suffered so. 17 years is a long time to be suffering with brain cancer.
+1
Musically, Roxette was superior to ABBA.
Sounds like the brain cancer was a glioblastoma, although they didnt specifically mention that. If it was, seventeen years survival is amazing. Not too long ago, the statistics were grim in that only 2% lived beyond five years and a huge percentage died within the first year after diagnosis.
I never heard of Marie Fredriksson, but any time somebody dies at 61 after a 17-year battle with cancer and leaves behind her husband and their two children (daughter Inez Josefin, 26, and son Oscar, 23), I get tears in my eyes for the family and their loss.
My wife lost her mom to cancer when my wife was only 18. I never met her mom. I know it left a huge void in my wife’s heart that was impossible to replace.
Saw her in a Youtube concert video. She was sitting down but still belted it out.
RIP.
Listen to your Heart is a beautiful song, loved the concert music video. Talented lady, RIP.
I don’t try and directly compare them, as ABBA was very much a product of their time. And to be perfectly fair, ABBA produced more than a few excellently-crafted, musically complex songs, such as SOS, The Winner Takes it All, and Knowing Me, Knowing You, to name a few (and certainly not to take anything away from some of the better offerings of Roxette).
