Merkel declares war on Trump over Nord Stream 2

German Chancellor Angela Merkel's reaction to the U.S. possible sanctions on the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline is a "clear declaration of war" on U.S. President Donald Trump, according to Bild newspaper.

Previously, she noted that Germany was opposed to U.S. extraterritorial sanctions and will "hold very decisive talks" on the issue of U.S. sanctions against Nord Stream-2.

According to Bild, Merkel's response to the Congress decision on sanctions was "clear". It was "a clear declaration of war" on Trump. The Chancellor "will not tolerate" the United States "continuing to undermine the gas pipeline project, which is backed by her," the newspaper wrote.

At the same time, the article stressed confidence that the construction of the Nord Stream-2 cannot be contained and the project will be completed soon.

Non-aggression Pact between USSR and Germany was anything but alliance. The very name of the pact clearly hints it.

There are lots of ways the Germans could make energy prices cheaper without shoveling money at what is at the very least a strategic competitor AND undermining NATO countries they are supposedly allied to in Eastern Europe. They could star by restarting their nuclear power plants. Then they could scale back the Gaia worship which has seen them massively subsidize boondoggles like windmills and solar panels.

That they accuse Americans of greed for wanting to sell natural gas to them while simultaneously leeching off of the American taxpayer to pay for THEIR national defense......even as they come nowhere close to fulfilling their promises to spend a paltry 2% of GDP on defense is a level of hypocrisy and chutzpah few could manage - but it sure seems to come to the Germans easily enough.

US-German trade war sounds even more stupid than that with China. What US has to trade with Germany?
As for Germany its export is pretty much unique.
Would you buy precision industrial equipment from China? Also no tariff would force Wall Street buys to ditch their Benzes.

Merkel supports others paying for her country’s national defense while the Germans refuse to do so themselves?

Yeah I bet she supports that. I’d be all in favor of others giving me free money too.

What does the US have to trade with Germany? Let’s see....there’s software and the whole tech industry. There’s pharmaceuticals and medical equipment - except the socialized medicine schemes in various countries refuse to pay for them.

I used to work for Medtronic. They’re a fortune 100 company. They make all sorts of medical devices. They had developed a new heart valve and had gone through years of expensive clinical trials in the US to get regulatory approval. It was more efficient than previous designs and would save a number of heart patients who would otherwise die in any given year. I worked on putting together the extensive scientific data proving the device’s effectiveness. We made presentations to the national health schemes in several countries - Germany and France among them. We were able to show how these devices would save the lives of thousands of their citizens per year. Nobody ever even questioned our evidence. It was air tight. They rejected the device anyway. Why? Price. They just didn’t want to pay the money. They opted instead to let thousands of their citizens die every year instead.

They strong arm the Pharmaceutical companies to sell their new drugs at cost - lest they simply reverse engineer them and use them as generics in their countries. That’s why those same drugs are so much more expensive in America. American consumers have to bear the R&D costs others refuse to pay for - yet another way in which the Yurps have been freeloading on America.

So don’t even try to tell me there is nothing the Germans would want to buy from America. I’ve seen it up close and personal. Their non tariff barriers prevent those sales from happening or they freeload as in the case of pharma.

I fully understand what you mean but the issue of socialized medicine is beyond topic. You won’t make them buy stuff which is not in demand there anyway.

Get happy Germany hater.
Germany agreed to increase NATO spending to the level of the US. Your complaints about that are stranger than strange.

Your assertion that Germany is undermining NATO countries in Eastern Europe is ridiculous. As if Germany is a slave State. How come restarting nuclear power plants is not “undermining NATO countries in Eastern Europe”...?

Hey FTL-bird... how about Trump stop undermining his allies and guarantee cheap energy for Europe... LoL!

NorseViking, it is rude to not simply answer what country you are in.

What are you ashamed of?

Someone posting regularly on an American forum, while taking a cheap-shot at another country, finally gets asked where you are and the reply is “Walhalla” - makes you arrogant, a nutjob or both.

German hater??? LOLOL! Meine Vorfahren waren Deutsche. Ich Han’ Deutsche geschichte gelernt und schon zweimal in Deutschland gewohnt. Das bedeutet aber nicht dass Ich die nutzlose Sitzpinkler die Deutschland heutzutage beherrschen unterstutzen muss. Scheiss ‘drauf!

Germany agreed to increase defense spending to a pitiful 2% of GDP. Their future budgets call for it to rise to 1.5%.....then sink back down. The US spends more like 4% of GDP on defense so GTFO with claims about how the Germans are doing their fair share under NATO. They aren’t.

You claim that Germany is not undermining states in Eastern Europe is ridiculous. That’s the whole point of Nordstrom I and now II - ie to cut out the “middlemen” (ie Eastern Europeans) and give Russia the flexibility to exert more leverage. Before they couldn’t cut off say Poland without also cutting off Germany and Western Europe. Now they will be able to. They will have a free hand to tighten the screws on Eastern European countries in this manner in a way they could not do previously. How can you not see that?

Nobody says Germany is expected to be “a slave state”. They’re expected to be a partner. They’re not acting like one. They’re - as usual - being extremely selfish.

How come restarting nuclear power plants is not undermining countries in Eastern Europe? Ummmm because it keeps Germany from being as dependent on Russia for its fuel? Because it would not shovel money at Russia? Because it would not provide Russia a means to exert pressure specifically against various Eastern European countries which they will be able to do when pipelines bypassing them are completed? Jesus, Think!

Trump isn’t “undermining” “allies”. He’s calling hypocritical freeloaders and leaches to account for their hypocrisy and greed. EVERY American President since the 1980s has opposed Nordstrom for obvious reasons. It’s not just Trump. Get a clue.

NATO really needs to create a children’s table for those members not meeting the 2% target. They can sit there while the adults in the 2% club make the decisions.

That is a mighty strange reply.

You are contradicting yourself but judging from your strange German statement that is not a surprise.

You insist Germany must support Eastern Europe by moving energy from Russia to Germany in the way you see fit. Because Germany must support other countries. That is not how the real world works and if other countries are affected they can do something productive for themselves.

Your arguments are absurd and your reasoning is badly flawed. So you go ahead and get a clue and while you do have fun getting triggered some more:

Germany to match US contribution to NATO budget

Let Herr Merkel build it, she just won’t do it with US materials or help and when Ivan decides he wants something he can turn the damned thing off in the middle of a January blizzard.

The US seriously needs to reexamine it’s role in NATO, is it strategically worth it? Should we help Poland and England, yes, but Germany, France and most of the western Europeans clearly resent us being there, so lets pack up those bases and disperse them in the Pacific where they are clearly needed.
