Weekly Garden Thread - December 21-27, 2019
December 21, 2019 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 12/21/2019 6:42:33 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

My wife has a large out door pot with Hens and Little Chicks.

If they were in the ground I would have covered them with leaves for the winter.

In the pot I have no idea how to keep their roots from freezing. The pot is far to large to bring inside.

Any advise would be appreciated.

Wishing you all a beautiful holiday week and Merry Christmas. Thankfully we just have a green bean casserole to make and some treats and an easy get together with another family. Right next door. Well they are about 800 feet away in the woods like us. The car will not even warm up. Also wishing you all the happiest of New Years and have fun planning next year’s gardens. Hey Diana, maybe for New Years week we can have a Post your New Years Garden Resolutions? Like something we will do differently this next season. I learn a lot from the others here.

My gosh, so funny, looking at the 10 gardens they feature, one is our own botanical garden where we are 25 year members in Grand Rapids. Have yet to get there for the decorations this year but it is always on our list.

Someone stop me - here is another and I love miniatures. Great ideas for someone who no longer puts up a tree like up.https://historymaniacmegan.com/2016/12/11/the-holly-and-ivy-world-of-miniature-christmas-gardens/

Thanks for posting - beautiful gardens! I have the Christmas tree lights on already this morning - brightens up that corner of the room. We had a death in the family yesterday - not unexpected, but it’s still put a bit of a damper on things so I’m looking for all things “cheerful”. We have a family birthday/Christmas gathering tomorrow so that is definitely something I’m looking forward to.

As for my little garden, the best I can do is leaving my 6 Dino Kale plants out there rather than harvesting them, so there’s SOMETHING green to see when I walk by! Those plants are tough - surviving nights in the low twenties! My little great-niece is dinosaur cRaZy big time so I’m getting her some Dino Kale seeds to plant in her garden next year ... her mom thinks she’ll love it .... ahhh, thinking about next year’s garden already! :-)

My fave Christmas wrappings----also done in a beige-ish ribbon/paper combo.

Pale green gift paper. Green burlap wired ribbon.
Paper doilies at edges. Joyeux Noel gift tag. (Merry Christmas in French).

My "garden" is mostly mesquites (Southern Arizona, Chihuahuan desert) but I did glimpse a lovely little yellow-rumped warbler at the birds' waterdish this morning.

Our backyard is filled with woodpeckers of various colors. Plus cardinals and a pair of left over robins.

Out here we've got the Northern cardinal's cousin, the pyrrhuloxia.

Thanks for the ping. So what are the best-tasting most-early cool-weather fruit-full tomatoes? I have seen the lists, but am looking for experience. I have Early Girl, which are very good, and disease-resistant.

When we lived in Minnesota, we had a visit from red colored sparrows (I think sparrows) from the far north.
They were almost tame and would land near our feeder while I was filling it.
I could almost touch them...
