How ‘Cats’ Became A Calamity At The Box Office With $6.5M Opening
Deadline ^ | December 22, 2019 | Anthony D'Alessandro

The atrocious response from audiences and critics toward the feature adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats has no doubt upset execs at Universal and Working Title this weekend. The movie wound up opening below its $10M-$15M projections to $6.5M, and while you can’t expect much business-wise from adult-skewing movies outside of Star Wars before Christmas Day, the audience PostTrak exits of 2 Stars and a C+ CinemaScore indicate a significantly less than Greatest Showman or Mary Poppins Returns box office future (those two holiday films scored A and A- CinemaScores) for the Tom Hooper directed musical.

In an age when we demand other prolific choices on the marquee outside of standard superhero and family franchise IP, musicals have shown to be a solid form of counterprogramming that taps into female audiences. Hence, the biggest mistake would be (yes, critics, I’m saying this) for Universal and Working Title to not make a movie version of Cats.

Some movies, plays, books, paintings, celebrities, songs, etc. just become a “thing,” regardless of their intrinsic merit. A form of mass hysteria, I guess.

In the early 90s there was a very funny short-lived sitcom starring Chris Elliott called “Get a Life” about a 30 year-old man who still delivers newspapers on his bicycle and lives with his parents (played by Bob Elliott and Elinor Donahue). In one episode, Chris puts on a stage production called “Zoo Animals on Wheels,” a hilarious take on Cats and another Lloyd-Weber musical, Starlight Express. Probably on YouTube. Also worth checking out on YouTube is a mock one-man show called “One Thousand Cats.”

Never got how a bunch of fap material for homosexual furries could ever make a dime in the real world. Well shows how far we’ve fallen.

At least A Star is Born made a killing unlike this horror show.

Lol. Star Wars yes. Richard jewell ? Not so much. After two weeks it’s only made 9 million. Tragic for Eastwood.

I saw this when it was playing at Winter Garden back in 1987. I thought it was stupid back then too.

I love Andrew Weber’s work, but that Cats thing I think is the biggest scam ever created.

One beautiful song, does NOT forgive him for the unusually shocking silliness of the whole enterprise. And really good talent does not help either.

JMHO

I think that this was a video made from one of the stage production companies. I might be wrong, but I enjoyed it very much.

Louis B. Mayer, DeMille, Goldwyn, etc., knew what the audiences wanted and gave it to them.

Probably because they themselves were salt-of-the-earth types who naturally bonded with Middle America.

Besides the corporate suits in China & Japan, the ones here seem to be these effete, sheltered brats who despise the common people and would rather put out vapid CGI stuff or boring art films.

Interesting thing about large numbers. Something can be hugely popular, and hugely loathed at the same time. A TV with 20 million viewers is a massive hit in this country, and yet that means 300 million people aren’t watching it. And it’s entirely possible that more people in that pile tried one episode and hated it than actually watch it. Cats fans are actually the minority, even though it one of the most popular plays ever.

The audience for the Broadway production was tourists from Kansas and such who thought that was what you saw in NYC. Also since it had virtually no narrative or character development, it can be consumed by tourists who don’t speak English.

Oh Tay, it didn't have to be this way....

Being a movie star isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Just ask Judy Garland or Ryan O'Neal ;O)

My understanding is it had a lot to do with turning Broadway into a tourist destination. Which I can see. Most tourist traps are all about color and noise with little content.
