My maternal great grandmother bought it via a self administered coat hanger job back in the the early 1900’s.

If so, it's the first"coathanger job" I've ever heard attested to as true. Hard to imagine anyone could survive that: the uterus being an organ quite tender on the inside, richly vascular, easy to lacerate and easy to infect.

By far most illegal abortions in the 19th and 20th centuries were committed by lowlife doctors--- the National Abortion League itself says 80%--- and almost all the rest by midwives and sage-femmes with herbals like pennyroyal and black cohosh, and drugs like quinine, which could bring on contractions and a miscarriage.

The first-wave American feminists, like Susan B. Anthony, refused to run ads in their publications for abortion-procurers like "Madame Restellar" and her "emmenogogues" (menstrual-inducing drugs) because they saw it as the exploititon of women, and murder.
