I agree he is masterful in this role...and no, not a sociopath as was stated earlier, he is dead on psychopath here. He’s extremely talented, and likely extremely disturbed as a person.

But for me, by far the more entertaining movie this year was Tarantino’s Once upon a time in Hollywood. I think if Clint Eastwood was twisted (in a good way) enough he could have made this movie.

A few years ago there was a thread on FR how he was trying to reinvent himself and start a career in rap music that crashed and burned in spectacular fashion. After a few casual observations in the news on his whereabouts, I never expected to see him turn up alive again.

Mostly because from what I understand, Phoenix went through years of serious drug addiction, severe mental breakdowns and worse. It's amazing that he's come back and ascended so far as to receive the award. If anyone has ever seen or experienced addiction, his tale should be an inspiring hope that people can be brought back into society. Let's hope he stays there.
