I’d like to use peat pots rather than plastic cups for my seedling. These are the 4” x 4” pots. Anyone have any experience with them?

I am 100% in LOVE with those Jiffy Peat Pellets. I must've sold 100,000 of them through the years, though never used them myself. I used them a few years back, and I just love them!
One of today's topics is going to be different ways so start plants on the cheap. I have to shovel some snow first though, LOL! :)
I’m glad you shared how to do it! I’m liking having fresh basil to use in the winter, now.
My Rosemary plants are doing amazingly well for just being in windows, but I am watering them every few days and feeding them with (liquid) Tiger Bloom.
I MIGHT just cut them all way back and put them under the lights, too. Good project for a snowy, blowy day like today.
I also like that you found the same vase, works and looks great.
Sorry I’m not posting much lately. Still growing peppers in between trips to the hospital. I am at the hospital now by my wife’s side as she recovers from biopsy surgery.
I use the pellets on most plants but would like to try cow pots on certain plants....like cucumbers. I have be using 16 oz clear plastic cups as the pellets have 4 leaves, cut holes in the bottom and always bottom water. I love being able to see the roots.
Big storm in mid-Missouri last night. Arkansas, Oklahoma and nearby got hit. We got 3.5 inches of rain. Lightning knocked out phone and email. Need more ground rods.
We have ice here, south of Oregon and west of Brooklyn. Not safe to drive today unless it warms up a lot.
I have been in the greenhouse business since birth,when I lived at my grandparent’s home which was connected to their glass greenhouses and garden center (Illinois). My father took us north to WI when I was 5 and he found a farm to build greenhouses on in Rock county. I left to build my own business which I retired from a few years ago. Also earned a degree in horticulture at UW Madison, but really the lifetime of experience was all I needed. Good thing college was cheap back then.
I like peat pots or the Jiffy pellets too. The only thing we used peat pots for in the greenhouse is the “vine crops” cucumbers, squash, watermelon, etc, because you can’t pop these plants out of plastic pots or packs because that damages their roots. So we recommend gently planting the peat pot after all chance of frost is gone.
But for home seeding and cuttings, peat pots are great.
I also love old clay pots. They remind me of what my grandparents used everyday, before plastic pots were available. They started their glass greenhouse business in 1933. They retired around 1970 and the land sold to developers. It is now just part of a long developed area in Lombard, Illinois. The land sale did fund their retirement years though.
I got a lot of clay pots for free at a garage sale last summer. The man was glad to get rid of them and I love clay pots. I keep my orchids in them.

We have a lot of ice. This is stopping my drive to the township garbage and recycling center. The birds are having a good time at my feeders today. Oh now it’s starting to snow. Very nice. Sarcasm On.

Who knows anything about fava beans? I’m thinking a lack of pollinators is the problem.
Thanks for the ping. Love all your pics. We had quite a storm last night-oodles of rain-some lightening. Green house had a couple of leaks-Hubby will have to do some calking—it’s where the wall of the house meets the greenhouse roof. Light rain continues today. Will be getting below freezing tonight.
Really pretty weather earlier this week 50s and 60s with several sunny days—enjoyed using the snack table in the green house for lunch and afternoon snacks.
Lemon tree has a huge amount of lemons about the size of a pea. I expect many of those to drop—they usually drop off and we get about 6 lemons—it’s really more of a bush than a tree. It’s about 3 ft. wide and a little less than 2 ft. tall.
The Meyer lemon is small still in a 10 inch pot and is blooming. Rosemary is doing well — this is my second winter with it—having no success for about 5 years prior, I almost didn’t try again.
I have a bay leaf tree in a 6 inch pot—it’s growing-putting on some new leaves.
Outdoors-Garlic is doing well-up a little over 6 inches. All other beds have something green except the one next to the compost bin. That is the one that I chose to refurbish-got most of the leftover biomass from garden and bone broth makings.
I dug down more than a foot, dumped a bunch of stuff in, and then covered it back up. I checked it out this week—looking nice and rich —black gold. Should be able to grow some great stuff there in the spring.
Hubby just gave me a list of his Baker’s Creek wish list to order-45 seed packets. LOL Even if he gets them all planted, he will never have time to take care of them. Well, that’s ok says he—I’m going to store some in the refrigerator for next year.

I think Diana and I are in zone 3. Southern Wisconsin. It’s a bit colder way “ up north” generally speaking. We did get -30 degrees last winter. That was fun.

We got a lot of rain too. Our electric gave a flicker a couple of times, but stayed on thank goodness.
