Charles Schumer’s 1999 letter about impeachment comes back to bite him

On Feb. 11, 1999 — one day before President Bill Clinton was acquitted in his impeachment trial before the Senate — Sen. Charles Schumer penned a passionate letter, outlining why the process had taken an unfair toll on the nation. He noted that the president believed he had not crossed a line, and praised the large threshold needed to get a conviction in the Senate. He also cheered the American people for opposing impeachment. A Gallup poll in December 1998 found that 35 percent of Americans were pro-impeachment, with 73 percent of Republicans and only 12 percent of Democrats in favor. Meanwhile, a Quinnipiac poll this month found that 51 percent of Americans approve of President Donald Trump’s impeachment, with 46 percent disapproving, but the partisan divide is even starker with just 7 percent of Republicans and a whopping 91 percent of Democrats in favor. Though the individual details are different, many of the same points crafted by Schumer more than 20 years ago echo Republican arguments against the impeachment of President Trump. Here is Sen. Schumer’s original letter in full, with some of the more prescient sections bolded by The Post . . .

“Meanwhile, a Quinnipiac poll”

Meaningless.

Schumer is a shameless and pathological liar. He is devoid of a conscience.

Quite the contrast of the “old” Democrats and this new double down scumbag type. If 9/11 were on POTUS Trump’s watch, the DNC would blame Trump and ask for calm and understanding of the Islamic sensitivity while trying to stop “warmonger” response.

"He noted that the president believed he had not crossed a line..."

Yeah, because a little fib under oath to a Federal Grand Jury is no big deal.

“He noted that the president believed he had not crossed a line...”

If he’d said “Gentlemen don’t discuss such things.” and stopped right there, I’d have given him a pass. Instead, first he lied, and at the same time he threw her under the bus. Complete and total rectal orifice.

Democrats have done exactly the very things they accused Republicans of doing in 1999 - using impeachment to remove a President they disliked from office.

And the difference between Clinton and Trump is while the former committed perjury - a federal felony, Trump hasn’t been accused of breaking any law.

In both Democrats just ignored the evidence and did what they wanted. Now we’re going to teach them the price of this kind of behavior.

Democrats are using impeachment in a bid to force the Senate to do for them what they can’t get at the ballot box.

That’s what its really all about.

Articles of impeachment were introduced against five of the six Republican presidents who have served since President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

From the letter:
“The second oak is the American people. They are not necessarily as informed as we are on the intricate particularities of this case. They didn’t follow every twist and turn. They knew that what the President did was wrong.

But they knew that the President’s wrongdoing reflected human frailty rather than malevolence or any abuse of power or duty. “

Somehow the Dims did not add “malevolence” and “abuse of duty” to the impeachment.
