Weekly Garden Thread - January 25-31, 2020
January 25, 2020 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 01/25/2020 7:16:21 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Hi, nice picture. Our driveway is steeper than that and icy right now. Getting ready to throw down some more salt. That’s my gardening report. LOL

I have been searching to purchase a Wollemi pine but have had no luck. Although a few have squeaked into a patio pot or garden, for the most part this pine is unavailable in the US.

Does anyone know why nurseries outside the US are prohibited from sending this plant to someone in country, and, more importantly, does anyone know how I could purchase one and plant it in my backyard?

Well, they ARE on the Endangered list so that’s probably part of the problem right there, as to why they’re not exported/imported. I’m sure it’s illegal, for starters.

They’re losing a lot of them to the Australian wild fires from what I’ve read. :(

I read that they saved the grove. Also, nurseries in UK and Australia ship the seeds and small pines to every other country except the US.

Does the USDA Site say why? That’s the only place I can think to look.

I wouldn’t advise breaking the law for a tree, though. ;)

You know you have a 21 oz can of cherries in your kitchen cabinet. How about this moist, fruity Red Velvet cake?
Cherries and buttermilk are the secret add-ins. For icing shortcut, use Duncan Hines Cream Cheese Frosting in can.
Add clusters of cherries to garnish server.

METHOD Elec/mixer/ combine pkg Duncan Hines Signature Red Velvet Cake Mix, 1/2 c ea buttermilk, juice from drained 21 oz can Cherries, melted butter, 3 lge eggs, tea vanilla. Bake in 3-9" greased/floured cake pans (springs back lightly pressed) 350 deg 28-30 min. Cool in pans 10 mins. Liftout; cool completely 30 min.

ASSEMBLE Frost/fill Layers on server, top and sides. OPTION sprinkle 7 oz flaked coconut over entire cake/press in. Garnish top w/ cherries.

An even easier home-baked cherry dessert. Serve warm out of the oven;
cold for breakfast, if leftover (fat chance). Of course you can add choc/chips.

Red Velvet Cherry Dump Cake

METHOD Dump 2-21 oz cans cherry pie filling into sprayed 9x13" pan.
Spread even w/ spatula. Sprinkle box Betty Crocker Red Velvet Cake Mix
over evenly. Pour cup melted sweet butter over evenly. Sprinkle w/ 1 1/2 c
sweetened coconut flakes. Bake 350 deg 50-60 min.

SERVE with ice cream or whipped cream.

There are special customs restrictions for importing live plant material, including seeds.

If you have a source for the tree, I’d suggest contacting seed companies that already bring plants and seeds in from other countries. I know Baker Creek send their seed hunters all over the world. If this tree is special, and can’t be gotten in the US, they might be interested.

No guarantees, but even if they don’t decide to import it for their own catalog, they might be able to point you in the right direction.
