He’s in the entertainment biz. He needs to cater to his audience. If his ratings plunge, he no longer has a job. And these kinds of slots don’t grow on trees. Even Nicholle Wallace, McCain’s flunky many rungs down, has to play to her audience. What these people really think - only they know. It is possible, of course, that the private thoughts reflect the public persona. But only to minimize the cognitive dissonance. It would be stressful to think one thing and code switch to something else for the cameras. Like an in-the-closet gay fella trying to repress his urge to switch the conversation topic to skin care.
