Because the Dems had the ability to drag the trial out for an incredibly long time with continuous amendments that needed arguing time and voting time. He traded them not doing that for a vote AFTER the SOTU.

Why TF did McConnell not vote on Friday and get it over with? Senate rules and precedents are too arcane for me. I just take it as given that McConnell couldn’t force a vote on Friday.
