Cases of syphilis in Britain are at their highest since the Second World War, a report has revealed.

Figures show there were more than 7,000 cases of syphilis in 2018, the worst figure since 1945 when almost 20,000 people were diagnosed.

Overall, there were nearly half a million cases of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in 2018, a rise of five per cent from the previous year.

That means one person is being diagnosed with an STI every 70 seconds.

I noticed that they glossed right over that with some other stats that did not give a clear picture of who, where and all the stuff that matters when these types of scenarios pop up. I can remember many videos in school and on show from PBS, Nova and the like that would got to great detail on where this stuff was coming from.

Yes syphilis eventually affects the brain. And, given the long waits to see a doctor through NHS (or any socialized government run health program) it will not be treated early enough. Or they could just use mercury like the Royal Navy did in the 1700s.
