Except for perhaps the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki Dresden is perhaps the most controversial bombing raid of World War II.

“Except for perhaps the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki Dresden is perhaps the most controversial bombing raid of World War II.”

I always thought it was a response to Coventry.

If the Germans had won the war, this would be exhibit A for war crimes against allied generals.

At least one historian of the war has stated the fire bombings of the German cities were unnecessary and were carried out at the insistence of a particular British officer who had a rather maniacal desire to destroy the German people.
I would accept it as justified if it definitely shortened that war.

Yep.
For the people who believe that the war should be lost if fighting meant retaliation in kind for the bombing of allied infrastructure in order to survive and win its controversial.

For people who have studied war enough to comprehend the logistics portion of War its just another inevitable consequence of starting wars which leaders and bureaucrats should be aware of when they launch wars.

I don’t have the lack of education which is an absolute requirement to consider this “controversial.”

Starting a war has consequences. Sometimes unbearably horrible consequences. There’s a lesson in there somewhere...

War really is hell for some. But it needs to be remembered that the Dresden attack was retaliation for the Nazi’s brutal attack on Coventry on the 14 Nov 1940. The Nazi’s had no regrets about the raid and deaths caused in Coventry. Only free peoples of nations like the UK and USA have feelings of guilt, remorse, and self-loathing for events that take place in time of unfettered war. Just my $.02

Dresden always brings out the Reich apologists. Feb of 45 there was still a lot of hard fighting to go and it wasn’t a time to be sensitive to the Nazis and worry about being too aggressive.

What is so controversial about Hiroshima and Nagasaki? Both were military actions designed to force the enemy to surrender. Which they did. As a result, millions of Japanese and American lives were saved when Japan surrendered. People who dare to blame US for H & N should be reminded of Pearl Harbor...

It shortened the war, and the Germans haven’t started another world war since then.

$crew all former nazis.

The Blitz begins as Germany bombs London - HISTORY
On September 7, 1940, 300 German bombers raid London, in the first of 57 consecutive nights of bombing. ... But with Germany failing to cripple Britain’s air power, especially in the Battle of Britain, Hitler changed strategies. ... By the end of the day, German planes had dropped 337 tons

The Nazis started the massive bombings of non combatants.

How many civilians did the German Nazis kill in Poland and Russia?

You win and end wars by killing enough of the enemy to demoralize and subdue them into quitting...No matter what it takes...

And they are as silent as a whore in Church about the conditions in the Concentration Camps, the Death Camps, the rounding up of innocent people and shipping them to them in rail road boxcars with no food or water. Not a peep about the Germans bombing Warsaw, Rotterdam, London, Stalingrad, Coventy. Or the systemic slaughter of Eastern Europeans especially Jews by German Special Units. They are also mute about the Germans starving to death over a million Russian POWs. People who live in glass houses should not throw bricks.
